Finchpaw padded on Kestrelswipe’s right side. The younger tomcat, normally alert, had recently been in a world of his own, unaware of things that had been going on around him. Regardless, he manages to shake the feeling off for the time being. He was looking forward to more combat training with his mentor. After all, it was his purpose to protect his loved ones from any possible danger that could show up. Finchpaw’s ears twitched, taking in the sounds that were happening around him and the smells around them. Although an ambush was highly unlikely, he could never be too careful.

Kestrelswipe padded along until they'd found a good clearing in the forest. His shoulders had been holding tension since his encounter with the Riverclan leader the day before, and he was hoping that focusing a little on his apprentice's training might serve as a good distraction.
"Now," he was saying, "I know you've already covered the basics of combat. I believe now it's time to try some...slightly more complicated maneuvers." He flicked his tail, the chocolate gold of his fur looking quite at home among the dirt and tree trunks. Kestrelswipe turned to face his apprentice, getting into a position ready to attack. "Your job is going to be to dodge. Try to anticipate where I'm aiming, and find where my weaknesses are as I go to strike."

Despite his vigilance that seemed to grow with his age, Finchpaw was completely unaware of the dilemma Kestrelswipe had been facing. The younger tomcat had noticed something seemed a whisker off about his mentor but the tom assumed that he just hadn’t rested well the previous night or something similar to that. He didn’t think it was anything deep. Perhaps it was good for the deputy.
When the chocolate feline spoke, the ginger tabby listened attentively, like he always did. Despite the almost angry expression Finchpaw seemed to default to most of the time as his neutral expression, it was hard to miss the way his eyes lit up in interest when his mentor mentioned teaching him more challenging maneuvers. Finchpaw got prepared for the spar, eyes narrowing as he got in a fighting stance.

The rules established, Kestrelswipe got into an attacking position. He and Finchpaw had done combat practice so many times now that it was starting to feel natural. Less correcting, less stuttering movements, just the typical, learned positioning that every warrior had ingrained in them. It was comfortable.
He paced back and forth a few times, trying to keep his apprentice ready, before he leaped to the right, aiming to hook a soft paw towards the back of Finchpaw's neck.
