One day, I’ll fight beside the warriors. Not against them

Galepaw stomped his way through the clan. his fur bristled His eye twitched, training was harder than he thought and it was worsening his mood by the second.

Making his way towards the apprentice hollow, his ears perked at the sight of his sister, Skypaw sitting down in her chosen nest. he drew a quick breath. He couldn't be in a bad mood and then talk to his sister. He sighed walking over to sit next to the Skypaw. His tail moved to curl tight around himself, Galepaw wanted to speak but he couldnt think of what. Sitting in silance for a second he opened his maw “So how has training been for you.”

lowering himself he rested his head on his paws. this was their hollow after all, now that they were apprentices anyway, and for now the only two to be apprentices. the hollow was nice and silent, something he enjoyed. he could feel his mood lightening.

Skypaw's ears quirked upward and forward when her brother made himself known in the den and flicked her plumed tail to greet him. She thought about his question, for perhaps longer than she should have before sighing, deciding that it would be worthless to lie, but also not wanting make her brother worry to much about her. "It's a new experience, I'm learning from Merryaster." Skypaw answered  with a little hum, trying to seem at least a little bit cheerful to sway the influence of her answer.

"At least we're still sleeping in the same den." She replied, laying on her belly as her brother did and she offered him a smile, a small one, but a smile none-the-less. "I miss Lilyriver a little bit, but at least we'll see her more with Elder chores." Skypaw added, trying to make a dreary emotion feel less so, she would hate to burden Galepaw with such things. 

Skypaw's shoulders shivered a bit then shuffled closer to her near identical littermate, not touching shoulders with him, but being close enough for their tails to brush. "I can only imagine what having a leader as a mentor is like, if it gets too much, you're always welcome to come to me." she added with a soft purr, smiling at him with a similar struggle in her eyes. She knew how she was feeling, at least right now, she did.

“That is better,” he voiced. They were the only apprentices, at least for the next two moons. After that, Beetlekit and Cricketkit would join them, and the hollow would feel less empty. For now, it was Galepaw and Skypaw’s personal den. He blinked at the memory of their mother, Lillyriver; he still hadn’t gotten used to not seeing her in their den, especially with how different the apprentice hollow looks from the nursery. He missed his mom but wouldn’t admit it aloud “She’s probably comfy in the elder den, not having to look after kits,” he meowed to the other white cat.

The tom watched as the feline shifted a bit closer to him. “That’s nice to know, and if it ever gets too much with Marryaster you can talk to me too,” he purred, returning the white cat’s small smile. The tom lifted his head from his paws to look fully at the she‑cat, squinting. She didn’t look like her usual self and definitely wasn’t acting like it; he would have expected her to give him a story about her training or a give him a wide smile. “Are you alright, Skypaw?” he asked. He might be wrong—perhaps this was just how Skypaw acts now—but it felt odd to ignore it. His mind drifted to her possibly not feeling well, though she hadn’t coughed or sneezed. When Clamsneeze was sick, he couldn’t hold a sneeze, but then again, his name ended with a sneeze 'Hopefully Coldstar doesn’t give me a name like that,' he thought.

His other thought was that she might be tired, but if the other feline were tired, she wouldn’t be making conversation.

When her brother almost immediately spotted that she seemed a bit... off, Skypaw sighed, her plume of a tail curling around her body. "I shouldn't be upset... Merryaster is a great mentor, but I'm worried that I'm failing her, failing Lilyriver, failing RiverClan." Skypaw answered, todays lesson has been several mistakes and there was little progress, how could she not be upset by that, it was failure, the worst kind of feeling.

"Lilyriver expects us to be great, but how am I supposed to be the great cat she sees when I can't even crouch right?" She murmured, looking down at her paws. She intended to keep these feelings secret for a little while longer, but she found keeping it from the only cat who might know how she feels to be a bit... redundent.

Part of her wondered what their mother saw in the both of them that made her think so highly, what made her want something great for them, so much so that she expects it. She felt terrible for the possibility of letting her down. "I don't know why I keep messing up, it just... makes me upset that I might be letting Lilyriver down. She's done so much for us."

He blinked at the she‑cat, confused about who “she” was until his sister revealed it was their mother. His ears slightly fell; he wanted to say something but opted to let Skypaw finish how she felt. He had messed up during training, which is why he showed up at the apprentice hollow upset in the first place, but Lilyriver had completely slipped his mind. perhaps that was his fault for not thinking of her.

As the other feline finished speaking, the tom didn’t know what to say. Opening his muzzle, he couldn’t find the right words for Skypaw. Lilyriver had done so much for them, and now they were both struggling in training. Sitting in silence, he began to realize his sister had a point. “Well… hm,” he murmured. His mind raced through every possible solution. “Well, then we’ll have to work harder,” he stated. “Make Lilyriver have proud of us.” A dumb plan? Yes, but it was the only thing he could think of. He thought he could convince Coldstar to show him more advanced thing or bother him until he did, but “He’ll just give me more chores…” he whispered to himself. he was stumped on other ideas

“Or we let Lillyriver be let down,” he meowed softly. his ears fell; it was the easiest but worst option for both of them. He remembered Lillyriver’s story about her scar, she had to retire because of it. they both could see and they were still messing up. lowering his head he rested it on his paw once again his mouth shaping into a frown

Skypaw nodded, that seemed logical enough. The harder the two worked, the better they would be able to get at what they were trying to do, if they improved quick enough, maybe Lilyriver would be even more proud of them than if they succeeded at a normal pace. "I want to make Lilyriver proud." She whispered under her breath as she watched her brother sink into his nest.

She was quick to move to his side and press her white fur against his. Sinking in beside him as she leaned against her brother as both a comfort to him and a comfort to herself. "We won't be doing it alone. We'll have each other, and in a few moons, Cricketkit and Beetlekit too. Maybe we could just enjoy the den while it's still just ours? Training is over after all." She offered, her tail flicking playfully.

After all, if they spent all their youth moping around, they would have no youth at all. "We can play a game, like old times, but maybe... a guessing game." She added, placing her plume of a tail across Galepaw's shoulders "We can think of things around camp and try and guess what the other one is thinking... maybe we could give each other hints as well." She added, something calm to end the say. Well, she hoped.

He smiled at his sister. She was right they still had a lot of time until Beetlekit and Cricketkit came and made the apprentice den home, the white tom rose himself from his laying position to sit next to the she-cat. His ears perked at the other feline as they mentioned a game, they hadn’t played a game together in a while, he had missed it slightly.

Picking himself up “We can play” he meowed. Taking a few steps forward he waited for his sister to come with him

Skypaw watched as Galepaw vacated the den an let out a quiet sigh that was followed by a light, relaxed smile. She rose to her paws outside game it is, she thought to herself as her paws fell in line with her brother's

Part of her knew this was just a distraction from her upset, but another part knew that her and her brother would only get closer due to this game... more-a-less, not on a grand scale, but it would add to it, so it counted, at least that's how Skypaw's mind was working. The more she hung out with Galepaw, the closer they were, it worked in the nursery, she didn't see a reason why it wouldn't now.

And so, she found the clearing with him. Sitting beside her brother, pelt shining all the same as her own. She was ready to begin the new game just as he was. Open to the connection that could grow. And a moment to relax from training to say the least. This would be nice.
