Spawn of flame, Thunder-struck, from the ashes I rise

Leopardrose padded steadily into ThunderClan’s woods, the bare trees creaking softly in the cool leafbare breeze. The crisp air was filled with the scent of frost and damp earth, but beneath it all, she could still detect the faint signs of prey hiding in the underbrush. As Coyotepaw stuck close to her side, Leopardrose felt a surge of warmth toward the young apprentice. It was clear that Coyotepaw was seeking comfort, perhaps even protection, and Leopardrose was more than willing to provide it.
When the apprentice spoke, admitting she hadn't known about Leopardrose's outsider origins, the Bengal warrior flicked an ear in acknowledgment. She noticed Coyotepaw's tiny, curious glance and smiled softly, realizing the young cat was wondering about her story. "Yes, I came from the outside too," Started the she-cat, her tone thoughtful as she led them deeper into the woods, weaving between leafbare-stripped bushes. "I wasn’t born in ThunderClan. My mother was from a different life, one that didn’t involve the clans at all." She didn't mention that her mother was a prized cat - like some sort of trophy to the Twolegs. In her eyes, a loner-born held less shame than one with kittypet blood.
Leopardrose continued as they neared a small clearing, the bare branches above them allowing cold, pale sunlight to filter through. "This seems like a good of a place as any - Coyotepaw. Tell me what you can smell from here." Let's see if she could scent what was around her.

Coyotepaw looked around with wide eyes. Yes, she had seen this all before, but each time she ventured out into the forest it couldn't help but feel so new all over again, especially after being cooped up in camp for what felt like forever. A small breeze ruffled the apprentice's fur, but she didn't mind all too much, more focusing on the way her paws crunched the leaves with each pawstep, no matter how softly she tried to walk. Cats like Leopardrose seemed to be able to walk in absolutely silence, whereas Coyotepaw felt heavy pawed, like her paws were too big to properly control.
She thought about her mentors words, her past and what might have brought her all the way to ThunderClan. Perhaps it was something tragic like herself, she didn't want to pry too much though, especially not upset Leopardrose either. 'Do you... like it in ThunderClan? Do you see it as your home? I.. I know its supposed to be my home, and no one ever treats me bad, but sometimes I just feel like..' Like I need to do everything in my power to prove myself, is what she wanted to say, but she instead shrugged, mumbling, 'I dunno'.
When the pair reached the small clearing, Coyotepaw parted her jaw, lifting her head up to hopefully catch whatever the breeze carried, just as Leopardrose had asked her. 'Um, the trees, they have that sharper smell. There is that musty smell from some of the dead leaves, but its not as strong as when we were in leaffall. There is also uhh..' She frowned a little, trying to focus extra hard. There would have to be some prey somewhere, unless her stomping had scared it all off. The breeze picked up a little, and with it carried the scent of an all so familiar mouse. 'Mice too, not many though.' She looked at her mentor as wasn't really sure what Leopardrose was wanting her to pick up, giving her an anxious look.

Leopardrose listened patiently as Coyotepaw spoke, her pale aqua eyes soft with understanding. She noticed how the young she-cat’s words trailed off, how her shoulders slumped slightly as she hesitated to express her full thoughts. The Bengal warrior recognized that feeling all too well - of wanting to say more but holding back, unsure if she had the right to speak her true feelings.
As they walked, Leopardrose considered Coyotepaw’s question, one that tugged at her heart. "It wasn’t always easy. At first, I felt like I had to prove myself every single day, to make sure everyone saw me as more than just an outsider." Her gaze turned thoughtful as they reached the clearing, where pale sunlight filtered down through the trees. "But I do love ThunderClan. It’s where I belong now. And it will feel that way for you too, in time. Just give yourself space to grow into it."
Leopardrose watched Coyotepaw lift her head and part her jaws to scent the air. Her apprentice was trying so hard, the warrior could see it in the way Coyotepaw’s brow furrowed with concentration. When she mentioned the familiar scents of trees, dead leaves, and finally mice, Leopardrose nodded with approval.
"Good." Came her soft purr. "You’re right about the mice. Leafbare makes it harder to find them, but they’re out there if you know where to look." She stepped forward, padding toward the edge of the clearing, where the underbrush grew thicker, casting faint shadows on the frosted earth. "Don’t worry if you can’t hear or scent everything perfectly just yet. That’ll come with time. You’re still learning, and I’m here to help you."
"The trick to hunting in leafbare is patience. The prey moves slower, but so do we. We can use the cold and quiet to our advantage, but it takes practice. Let’s see if we can catch that mouse you scented. Would you want me to demonstrate for you first, or try on your own first? If you stay low and keep your movements controlled you might be able to catch it. And even if you don't on the first round it’s the effort that counts."

'I'll try..' Coyotepaw trailed off again, things took time, especially growing up and fitting in. Coyotepaw would get there, with the right cats helping her. Despite having said a few things, her face was still scrunched up in concentration, trying to find anything else, but she wasn't picking up much, instead the stinky leaves clouded her senses. 'What else is there?' She followed Leopardrose as she moved towards the edges, the scent of the mouse stronger now.
'Um, you can catch it' Seeing as I would probably just scare it away anyway. Coyotepaw would follow closely beside, watching her mentor's every move in the hopes that she could one day move with the precision and elegance that Leopardrose did. Her mentor was sleek, powerful and beautiful; everything that Coyotepaw aspired to be in her own way. Why? Because that is what everyone else seemed to like, so it must be what Coyotepaw should want too. Deep down though, at the very bottom of her heart, Coyotepaw just wanted to go home.

Leopardrose gave Coyotepaw a reassuring nod as the young apprentice trailed off, clearly still uncertain but willing to try. She could see the tension in Coyotepaw’s posture, the way her ears flicked and her nose twitched as she strained to pick up more scents. It was admirable, but Leopardrose understood that confidence would take time.
"Don’t worry." Leopardrose meowed gently, noticing the way Coyotepaw’s thoughts seemed to be clouded with self-doubt. "It’s normal to feel like you’re not catching everything right away. Trust your instincts. We’ll work on sharpening them together."
When Coyotepaw offered for her to catch the mouse instead, Leopardrose hesitated for a moment, then nodded. She could sense the apprentice’s desire to watch and learn first before trying herself. It was a smart decision - Coyotepaw wanted to absorb every detail before acting, something Leopardrose could appreciate.
She gave another nod, crouching low as she turned her attention to the underbrush where the mouse hid. Her muscles rippled beneath her spotted pelt as she moved with quiet precision, each step measured, her weight carefully shifted to avoid the dry leaves underpaw. She crept closer, her tail hovering just above the ground as she neared the mouse’s hiding spot.
With a sudden, graceful pounce, Leopardrose landed lightly on the mouse, swiftly dispatching it with a sharp bite. She straightened up, the mouse limp in her jaws, and padded back toward Coyotepaw, setting it down between them. "There we go." She meowed, her voice warm. "Did you notice how I kept my movements slow and controlled? No sudden rushes until I was close enough to strike."
As she spoke, she couldn’t help but notice Coyotepaw’s quiet, almost longing expression. The apprentice was clearly troubled by something more than just the challenges of hunting. Leopardrose didn’t push - she knew that Coyotepaw would speak when she was ready - but she made a mental note to keep a closer eye on her.

Coyotepaw crouched beside her mentor, lowering herself so that her belly lightly brushed the floor. The cold ground tickled her belly, and she realised she was maybe a little too low. Lifting herself up a little more, Coyotepaw held her ground, waiting for Leopardrose to take the first steps. Her heart thundered in her chest; What if she mucked up and ruined the hunt for Leopardrose? What if she didn't copy right? Coyotepaw snapped out if it a moment later though, knowing she had to be calm and steady to not alert any prey.
Her warm, amber eyes were trained on Leopardrose, carefully watching the way she precisely placed her paws on the ground, senses hyper focused on the mouse ahead. Coyotepaw wanted to move with her, to practise with her, but she understood it was better to watch, so from her crouching position she watched how Leopardrose positioned her body and tail.
The sudden pounce startled Coyotepaw, but she didn't move, keeping as still as she could. In an instant the mouse was dead, limp within her mentor's jaws. Coyotepaw was so focused on replaying her mentors actions she almost forgot to reply to her last question, giving her a blank stare before finally remembering she had to open her mouth. 'Yeah, how do you know when to go though? It looked like you just randomly picked when to pounce. I think my paws are a bit big too, I'm not very good at staying quiet like you were.'

Leopardrose flicked her ears in amusement at Coyotepaw's question, appreciating the young apprentice's curiosity and eagerness to learn. She had been exactly like that once - so focused on every detail, worried about getting everything right.
"It might look like I pounced randomly," Leopardrose began, sitting down beside the apprentice with a gentle purr. "But it’s all about reading the prey’s movements. You want to wait until it’s fully distracted, when it’s not paying attention to you anymore. The moment it’s focused on something else - whether it’s eating or grooming - that’s your chance."
She raised her paw, flexing her claws to emphasize her point. "As for your paws, don’t worry too much about that. Every cat has a different style when it comes to hunting. You’ll learn how to move in a way that works for you, big paws or not. Just practice keeping light on them - feel the ground beneath your pads before you step, and try to avoid twigs or dry leaves."
Her gaze softened as she dug a shallow hole for the mouse to go in, a treasure to be unearthed later once they were done with the hunt. Her aqua eyes flashed towards her lilac pelt as she gave her encouragement. "Why don't you take the lead now and see if you scent anything else for a bit."

Wait until it's fully distracted... alright. I'll have to practise building up my strength too so I can pounce from further away! Coyotepaw gave Leopardrose a semi-energetic nod. Practise practise practise is what it would be, and if Leopardrose was right she would get it down soon enough.
The lilac apprentice focus on her senses again. She had scented more than one mouse earlier, she knew there would be another around here somewhere. She was lucky Leopardrose had buried the other one, as it might have clouded her judgement, for soon enough she picked up a mouth-watering scent. She gave Leopardrose a little look before crouching down just as her mentor had done before. Extra careful this time, her belly did not brush the undergrowth, leaving her crouching in silence.
It was now time to begin creeping forward. She thought back to how Leopardrose had distributed the weight across her, and how she crept with slow precision, not rush a single step. Rather than aiming to get to the mouse, Coyotepaw decided to just take a few paw steps, letting her paw spread across the ground as she kept most of her weight on her hind legs. Her tail steamlined behind her, resisting the urge to twitch in excitement at the hunt. She was making progress, getting closer and closer until, SNAP!
A tiny twig shattered beneath Coyotepaw's foot, all while she could see the mouse ahead. Not even giving herself time to think, Coyotepaw pounce forward as the mouse fled in a panic. Her hind legs pushed againt the group with all her might, and just in time her paw managed to snag the tail of the mouse, in which she dragged it back towards her before giving the final blow.
She had caught it, but it was embarrassing nonetheless. Fear seeped through her pelt as she turned to face Leopardrose with the mouse hanging from her jaw, even though her heart was telling her Leopardrose would likely be proud. Catching a mouse after startling it wasn't easy, but startling is was also something a warrior should not be doing. 'I uh.. I caught it at least' she mumbled, though there was a tiny flicker in her gaze, reflecting some sort of hint of humour, something Coytoepaw didn't show to the rest of her clanmates.

Leopardrose watched intently as Coyotepaw crept forward, her pale aqua eyes warm with pride as she saw the apprentice mimicking her earlier moves. She could sense the focus in Coyotepaw’s every step, the careful attention to detail. When the twig snapped, Leopardrose didn’t flinch. She had been expecting mistakes - they were part of learning - but she knew Coyotepaw had the drive to push through.
The young she-cat’s pounce was swift and determined, and despite the fumble, she managed to catch the mouse. Leopardrose padded over as Coyotepaw turned around, mouse dangling from her jaws, a mixture of embarrassment and triumph flickering in her amber eyes.
Leopardrose let out a soft purr of approval, her tail curling slightly. "You did catch it." She meowed, nodding encouragingly. "And that’s the most important part. Startling it doesn’t mean you failed - in fact, reacting quickly like that shows you have good instincts. Not every hunt is perfect, and sometimes things don’t go as planned. What matters is how you adjust in the moment."
She leaned forward, giving Coyotepaw a gentle nudge on the shoulder. "It was a good catch, and you should be proud of that. You’re learning, and every mistake is just one step closer to improving." Leopardrose’s gaze softened further, noticing the hint of humor in Coyotepaw’s expression. "Besides." Her grin stretched on her maw, tail flicking playfully. "I’ve definitely had worse hunts."

Coyotepaw listened to her mentor's words intently. She needed to know exactly how she could improve. The twig snapping was unfortunate, perhaps Coyotepaw needed to work out how to be a little lighter on her paws, or maybe she needed to observe her path before starting the hunt. Either way, the mouse hung from her jaws and that was enough for now. She averted her gaze when Leopardrose mentioned her having good instincts. She hadn't been complimented before, no one really paid her much attention so she didn't know how to react. 'No, I- that's what anyone would have done, my instincts are the same as everyone else's.'
The gentle nudge that Leopardrose had given her on the shoulder was a subtle indication that she could relax, a hint of familiarity that she needed. Coyotepaw padded over to the place that her mentor had buried her prey just earlier, tucking her own mouse into the shallow hole, covering it with a few leaves beside. 'You can't get worse than that though! Well, you could miss I guess.. or like.. fall over...' Coyotepaw's face softened as she realised her hunt really hadn't been that bad. As long as it was caught, it didn't exactly matter what happened beforehand.

Leopardrose watched as Coyotepaw buried her catch, her heart warming at the apprentice’s growing confidence. The way Coyotepaw responded - downplaying the praise - reminded her so much of herself during her own apprenticeship. It was always easier to dismiss compliments than to fully accept them, especially when you were used to blending into the background.
Padding over to stand beside her, Leopardrose let out a small, amused purr. "You’d be surprised how much worse it can get." Her tone was light, but there was a genuine fondness in her voice. "I’ve missed more times than I’d care to admit. Once, I tripped over my own paws chasing a squirrel. Ended up tangled in a bush while the squirrel just sat there, watching me with this smug little look. It didn’t even bother running." She let out a laugh, her tail flicking playfully behind her.
She gave Coyotepaw an encouraging glance, her aqua eyes gleaming. "And besides, you’ve already got something not every cat has - the ability to laugh at yourself. That’ll get you far in this world." Her gaze softened, hoping that somehow her encouragement was wearing through the other she-cat. "Ready to see if we can try scenting something else further down?"

The ability to laugh at yourself, huh? I guess that is a good thing. The lilac apprentice gave Leopardrose a small, affirming nod. Despite still feeling a deep pit at the bottom of her stomach, Coyotepaw's mentor was right, and her encouragement was working, to the best it could at least, but small steps were being made and that was more than enough.
'Yeah, sure. Are you wanting me to try again?' Coyotepaw asked. She had her maw parted again as she let her senses take in the surroundings, this time not as overwhelming. There were scents that were drawing her forward, but she waited for Leopardrose's approval first. It would take a long time for Coyotepaw too start taking action on her own.

Leopardrose’s whiskers twitched. There was approval in her eyes, but there was always room for improvement. The young apprentice’s small nod was a sign of progress, and that was more than enough for her for now. "That’s the spirit." she purred, noticing the subtle shift in Coyotepaw’s vibe.
"Yes, I want you to try again," Leopardrose meowed with an encouraging flick of her tail, yet her tone was firm. "I know it's hard to drown out the noise around you, but focus on the scent that feels the clearest. Let your instincts guide you."
She stepped back slightly, allowing Coyotepaw the space to take the lead even if her aqua eyes tried to guide her in the right direction. It was easy to see how the lilac apprentice still hesitated, unsure of herself - but every step forward mattered. Leopardrose believed in her, even if Coyotepaw didn’t fully believe in herself yet.
"Just follow your nose, and let’s see what we can find."

Like before, Coyotepaw set to work on trying to scent something. She was to lead, but no matter how much she didn't want to, she knew she had to. Taking a small, shallow breath, Coyotepaw went to see what she could find. There was no point staying in one place. Anything close by would likely have been scared away, so the lilac she-cat started to head forwards, trying to keep her paws light on the ground. She kept her eyes narrowed, taking in her surroundings with admiration whilst also hoping to see a rustle of a bush or tree.
She couldn't find much. To many smells filled her nose, and none of them seemed like prey. That did not mean she would stop though. She had to find something. There was no way she would return from her training only having caught a singular mouse. Frowning for a moment, she turned to Leopardrose, a slight look of determination on her face. 'I can't smell anything... but if you can, can you please tell me. I want to catch it.'

There was something admirable in Coyotepaw's determination, even if she struggled with her confidence. But Leopardrose wasn’t going to step in just yet - not until it was necessary.
When Coyotepaw turned to her, eyes filled with determination despite her frustration, Leopardrose’s heart warmed. She could see the drive to improve, and that was something she valued more than anything. She dipped her head in acknowledgment of the apprentice’s request, but instead of offering immediate assistance, Leopardrose lifted her own head to scent the air.
For a moment there was only the scent of pine and frost. But then, just faintly, her nose caught a whiff of something small, something feathery. Her ears twitched, picking up the faintest of flutters in a bush's branches nearby.
"A chickadee." Leopardrose murmured, her aqua eyes flicking up to a nearby bush. She gestured with a quick motion of her tail. "Birds can be tricky to catch - certainly much harder than a mouse, but I'll get into position too and with both of us, we can catch it. Just keep your paws light and focused..."
She waited for some sort of acknowledgement from the apprentice before she moved forward in a crouch. Her rosetted pelt disappeared behind a tree, shadowed by withered leaves, before she came to the other side of the bush in question. Flanking the creature would give them a higher chance of a successful hunt.

So, there was something out there, it was just that Coyotepaw was having trouble scenting it. The lilac apprentice watched how Leopardrose's ears picked up things, alongside her nose, twitching to the sounds of the wilderness. Rather than just relying on her nose this time, Coyotepaw paid attention to what she could hear too. A flutter of wings sounded in the distance, and Coyotepaw's head swiveled instantly, her ears trying to pick up more of the sound. It was likely this was the chickadee Leopardrose had mentioned.
Nodding at her mentor's instructions, Coyotepaw watched as the dappled pelt of the she cat disappeared, flanking one side of the bird so Coyotepaw could round the other. Her orange eyes lingered on Leopardrose for a moment before Coyotepaw lowered herself down, with the motion of doing so feeling easier than last time. From the situation it seemed as though Leopardrose was there as backup. Coyotepaw would go in for the hunt, and if she missed or startled it too early, her mentor would be there to leap up and catch it instead.
Coyotepaw looked to the ground, glad to see there weren't any sticks to ruin it, for it was now time to begin the hunt. She crept forward, making sure to distribute her weight the best she could so her paws would stay silent against the cold ground. She was close, closer than she had been to the mouse and the bird still hadn't noticed her. Her muscled tensed and she pounced, the bird letting out a startled call and taking to the sky within the same moment. Coyotepaw might no be that fast, but she contained a raw, natural strength from her sire leading to both her slightly larger size and muscle. Her leap was strong, enough to let her claws grasp onto the chickadee mid air as the two tumbled back down to the ground. Quickly she bit down, giving it a killing blow before turning to Leopardrose, the bird hanging from her mouth. Her gaze looked a little blank, as if she didn't know how to feel. Even after a moon of hunting and training Coyotepaw was either too fearful to react, or just didn't know how.

Leopardrose remained still in her crouch, watching Coyotepaw with keen eyes as the apprentice moved into position. The young cat was learning, adapting, and that was more than half the battle. Leopardrose stayed prepared to intervene, but there was a part of her that hoped Coyotepaw would succeed on her own this time.
When Coyotepaw leapt, the bird took flight, and Leopardrose tensed, ready to spring if needed. But then she saw the apprentice’s claws catch the bird mid-air. Coyotepaw’s strength showed as she brought the chickadee back down to the ground, swiftly delivering a killing blow.
For a heartbeat, Leopardrose remained where she was, watching Coyotepaw as the young she-cat turned to her, the bird hanging from her mouth. There was a certain blankness in Coyotepaw’s expression, an uncertainty that tugged at Leopardrose’s heart. It was a moment of success, but Coyotepaw seemed unsure of how to feel about it.
With a soft purr, Leopardrose rose from her hiding spot and padded toward the apprentice. Her tone tried to match the warmth of encouragement. "That was a strong pounce, and you caught it all on your own. Well done."
Her gaze softened as she looked down at the bird. "...Every hunt, every moment, it’ll get easier to understand." Leopardrose paused, then added with a playful glint. "Chickadees are no small feat."

Despite knowing Leopardrose was probably speaking the truth, Coyotepaw looked at the chickadee with disdain. The birds were tiny, and would feed no more than an apprentice. In leafbare, any food was good, but the lilac apprentice still felt as though she could do many times better. She took the bird over to where the other prey had been buried, carefully hiding it under the leaves before looking back at Leopardrose. If they managed to catch anything else, they could probably carry one or two more pieces back home with what they had already caught, but like before, Coyotepaw couldn't really scent anything. Today was about exploring and hunting, and they had done lots of hunting so perhaps they could begin to go home, but travel a different way back? Coyotepaw would like that, but she would never ever ask to do so.

As Coyotepaw turned back, silent but with a glimmer of something unspoken in her eyes, Leopardrose dipped her head in thought. They could always continue on thier path and explore further. If they came across something to hunt that could make a lesson of, they'd stop, but for now the she-cat unburied the catch.
"Why don’t we take a longer route back? Let's continue down the border towards Sunningrocks and then head back thorugh the woods. With a bit of luck, there might still be something tasty nearby - and if not, it’ll give us a different view on the way home.”
Without waiting for Coyotepaw to refuse, Leopardrose turned, setting off at a steady pace. She cast a quick glance back, giving her apprentice an encouraging nod to follow. Today’s lesson had been about more than hunting. It was also about seeing the possibilities in each moment, something she hoped Coyotepaw would start to embrace.
