The sun hung heavy in the sky, its golden like baking the twoleg paths and melting the sludgy snow Fox had been walking through since dawn. His paws ached with every step and though his spirit remained light, his limbs begged for pause. The scent of pine and dust clung to the air, but beneath it was something sharper, unfamiliar wood acrid oil and the tang or iron. He'd wandered close to the Treecut place.

Fox hesitated at the edge of the clearing, amber eyes scanning the strange sight. The twolegs hadn't returned yet, but their massive growling monsters slumbered in crooked rows, half-draped in leaves and shadows. Fallen logs and broken branches littered the earth, and something about the place made the fur along his spine prickle. Still, the shaded trees standing stubborn at the edges offered promise, a quiet place away from sharp thorns and nosy birds.

He padded in slowly, picking his way around a rusted chain ans through the low-hanging branches. The earth was still cold beneath the trees, soft with scattered pine needles and the faint scent of sap. No sounds of paws or voices, just the occasional creek of wind shifting high branches above him.

With a contented sigh, Fox lowered himself beneath the broadest tree he could find, its leafy canopy casting a soft, dappled shade over his back. He curled his tail loosely around his side, ears twitching lazily at a buzzing fly. "Not a bad place for a weary traveler" he murmured to himself with a half-grin, closing his eyes for just a moment's rest.
