Ask to Join Baby Birdies

I may be small, but I’m braver than I look.

Robinkit had only just woken up and was fairly groggy, flicking her unfolded ear, Robinkit blinked her eyes for a moment and saw a little ginger pelt in front of her, standing vigil over the nursery she quickly recognized the ticked tabby pelt of her littermate and tilted her head, maybe this was a game. She narrowed her eyes observantly, he didn't seem in any immanent danger, so why not join him in this little play vigil.

Robinkit shook her short dappled pelt and stood steadily on her paws, padding over to her littermate and sitting beside him. She wondered why he was sitting so solemnly in front of the nursery, was he protecting Rimekit? Robinkit wished to do that to, that big spider that snuck in could have gotten her, Robinkit wanted to make sure the newborn was okay as well. So she wordlessly puffed out her chest to make her seem bigger than she was, only being slightly smaller than her red littermate.

After a few moments of silence, that seemed to feel like days, Robinkit turned her brother and tilted her head, the tip of her ginger and black tail twitching "Finchkit, whatcha' doin'?" she asked, nudging the tom with her little pink nose to get him out of his silent vigil of what she thought was a small game, but quickly became rather boring.

"You don’t need to guard the nursery, the warriors do that" Robinkit replied, flicking the tip of her black and ginger tail, she wondered why Finchkit was so protective of the nursery. He wasn’t even the oldest there, it was technically Robinkit as she was born first. But regardless, at the mention of a game, Robinkit’s ear perked up, wondering what sort of game they could play. "Sure, but what game should we play?" 

At the mention was Wildcry, Robinkit flicked her ear, Wildcry was both mind and mean, and Robinkit had no idea what to think of the new queen, but Rimekit was a rather cute little bundle of fuzz. Robinkit wasn’t able to go near her yet though, according to Wildcry anyway. "Wildcry is caring for Rimekit remember? She won’t have time for stories, but later maybe the elders can tell us some stories" she meowed finally, working the ground with her tiny paws the snow was in fact cold on her paws, but Robinkit was sure she could handle it. 

"Besides" Robinkit added turning hey not-yet yellow eyes towards her brother "games won’t make elders angry unless we run into their paws" She meowed, though the statement was made in genuine kindness and a certain belief that she would be shouted at by all elders if she were to be a slight inconvenience… except for maybe Bravesong, she heard he was in the nursery for a while

Robinkit shifted beside Finchkit, her not-yet yellow eyes flicking to the nursery where Rimekit was resting. The thought of Rimekit being like a baby sister didn’t quite sit right with her. She wasn’t really family, not like Finchkit was. Rimekit was just… another kit, more of a denmate than a sister. They’d share the nursery, but it didn’t feel the same as the bond she shared with her brother.

"I don’t really think of her like a sister," Robinkit murmured, more to herself than Finchkit. "She's just another kit, like a denmate. We’ll play with her when she’s bigger, but… it’s not the same." She glanced over at Finchkit, feeling a little silly for admitting it. Maybe he wouldn’t understand; Finchkit seemed to like the idea of Rimekit being like a baby sister.

When Finchkit asked what game she wanted to play, Robinkit hesitated. Usually, she just followed his lead. But this time, she had an idea of her own.

"Maybe we can pretend to be warriors on a mission?" she suggested shyly, her tail flicking nervously. "Like… we have to find something important hidden in camp, and we can’t let anyone see us. If they do, we’ll fail the mission." Her heart quickened a little with excitement at the thought. "I could be lookout while you sneak around to find the secret thing."

She gave Finchkit a small, hopeful smile. "What do you think?"

Robinkit shifted her paws nervously, casting a glance over to the nursery where Wildcry and Rimekit were. "Rimekit’s not our sister" she mumbled quietly, her voice soft and unsure. "She belongs to Wildcry, and she’s... really little. We don’t play together, and I don’t really know her." Robinkit hesitated, glancing down at her paws. "I think of her like... like another kit. Not like a sister. I guess I don’t feel like she’s a sister ‘cause we’re not really close."

Her yellow eyes flickered up to meet Finchkit’s, hoping he understood. She didn’t want to upset him or sound mean, but it was hard to explain how she felt. Talking about these things made her feel small and unsure.

But when Finchkit agreed to their mission, Robinkit brightened a little, her shyness giving way to the comfort of familiar play. "Okay" she said softly, thinking carefully. "You can find the shiny stone near the warrior’s den. I saw it yesterday... it’s kinda hidden under some leaves. It’s really pretty. No one will miss it if we take it for a bit."

She offered a small, hopeful smile. "I’ll keep watch, just like you said. No one will see you." She liked the idea of having something important to do, even if it was just a game. It made her feel a little braver.

Robinkit watched Finchkit silently, her wide eyes following his movements as he crouched down to begin their little 'mission.' She didn’t quite understand why Finchkit saw Rimekit differently than she did, but she was too shy and unsure to voice her feelings any further. Instead, she remained quiet, her soft fur ruffled slightly in the breeze, and focused on what was ahead.

She glanced toward the warriors’ den where her brother was heading and then quickly back at him. A small, encouraging smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "Good luck, Finchkit" she whispered, her voice barely audible but filled with sincerity. She lowered herself slightly to stay hidden, ready to keep watch like they planned.

Despite her quiet nature, Robinkit felt a warm flicker of pride for her brother as he set off on their little adventure. So now, with her wishes of luck to her littermate, Robinkit perked up her unfolded ear and it began to swivel searching for any sound that they might be being watched. Aside from the usual breath of the queens and the new breathing of Rimekit, Robinkit didn't hear much which was good, she was glad to simply observe and not go jumping into the fray.

Yellow eyes soon glanced back at the warriors den then towards Finchkit, not far now, the tri-coloured kit noted to herself before steadying herself again and puffing out her chest, moving her gaze around camp, trying to be the best lookout she could.

Robinkit watched Finchkit's confident steps with wide, admiring eyes, her small form huddled safely by the nursery entrance. Her heart fluttered with a mix of excitement and nervousness, quietly rooting for his bravery. She knew that she wouldn't want to get caught by any oncoming warriors and get scolded for simply playing outside, but Finchkit did it without a worry in the world, and she admired that about him... Finchkit the brave, that's what he is.

When he suddenly darted back, fur fluffed up in a frightened puff, she gasped softly, her own fur fluffed up in worry. When she noticed it wasn't much but a bug that crawled near his paws, her worry quickly shifting into a gentle smile. She padded over to him, her voice soft and full of understanding. "Oh, Finchkit… did something scare you?" she murmured, her gaze warm and reassuring. "I think bugs are a little scary too."

After a pause, she nudged his shoulder gently, her own courage barely showing through. She didn't want her brother to feel alone in his fear, so she nuzzled up to him, hoping that it might help calm his fear "Maybe… next time we could go together? I’ll be right there with you" she added softly, hoping to bring him comfort. She truly did want to make her brother happy, and if that meant getting caught by warriors, than so be it, a happy Finchkit meant a happy Robinkit.
