Spawn of flame, Thunder-struck, from the ashes I rise

The freezing rain from the night before had left the earth coated in a slick, glassy sheet, and she had already seen Bravesong stumble on their way to the fresh-kill pile. She had grabbed her apprentice in the early afternoon, sunhigh, where the weather would be less frozen against their pelts. It was better to let the apprentice have the morning while she mentally prepared for the day's training.
After picking out a modest piece of prey, she took her apprentice to the edges of the territory nearest to Two-Leg Place.Training Coyotepaw wasn’t just about teaching her to fight or hunt; it was about showing her what it meant to be ThunderClan. Nearest to the captive cats wasn't her favorite place, but its boundary held lessons that every apprentice needed to learn - about duty, about danger, and about the strength that came from being part of something greater than themselves.

Her confidence was gaining. Slowly, but it was there. She still didn't speak all that much, and that was likely something that wouldn't go away, but she had been looking to Leopardrose for reassurance a lot less as of lately. Still didn't stop the voices in her head though. Coyotepaw had spent the morning not doing much at all. She had just sat inside the apprentice's den alone, contemplating all that had happened. Most of her thoughts drifted towards her siblings, and what it was like seeing them.
She had no idea what they were doing today, and followed closely behind her mentor. Strong scents filled her mouth, scents she recognised faintly as two-legs smells. Why were they here? This place wasn't new to her, for she had explored this area within their borders before, but she wasn't exactly sure why they were going here for training. She didn't question Leopardrose though, she trusted her for the most part.

Leopardrose cast a quick glance back at Coyotepaw as they padded closer to the Thunderpath, the acrid tang of two-leg scents growing sharper with each step. Her apprentice followed without question, her paws sure despite the treacherous ground left behind by the freezing rain. That quiet trust was something Leopardrose had come to appreciate about Coyotepaw. She wasn’t the type to fill the air with chatter.
“Careful here...” Leopardrose mumbled distinctly as they approached a patch of ice clinging stubbornly to the shaded earth. She slowed her pace, allowing Coyotepaw to navigate around it before continuing. The sharp, distant hum of monsters rumbled faintly across the horizon, a sound that made the fur along her spine prickle. Even after all this time, the Thunderpath never failed to unsettle her.
As they neared the edge of the border, Leopardrose came to a halt beneath a cluster of frost-dusted brambles, the jagged branches arching protectively overhead. The ground was damp and slick, but the spot provided a decent vantage point of the Thunderpath without getting too close. She settled onto her haunches and flicked her tail, signaling Coyotepaw to sit beside her.
“I don't like being so close to Twolegplace, but for a lesson, it'll have to do..." She gestured with her nose toward the distant stretch of gray that marked the Thunderpath. "This is the edge of our world, Coyotepaw. Beyond it lies theirs. It’s not our place, and it’s not safe. But here...Here is ours. Every blade of grass, every tree, every bit of prey - it belongs to ThunderClan. And it’s our duty to protect it, together...." Leopardrose let out a forlorn sort of sigh, brows furrowing. "That's what Moosestar told me - but it's not so simple, not for cats like us. I'm ashamed of what I was, of where I came from. It hasn't been easy adapting to life in ThunderClan, but I owe every effort to do the same for you, Coyotepaw."
Leopardrose turned to her apprentice, aqua eyes searching Coyotepaw’s face wondering what the Code might mean to her. “Do you know why that’s important?"

As they continued forward, Coyotepaw dug her claws into the thick ice and snow with each step. She didn't want to risk slipping, to save herself from embarrassment and injury. Surprisingly enough she wasn't too wobbly on the slippery ground. Perhaps her slightly larger paws did have their uses.
At the sounds of humming in the distance, the lilac apprentice froze for a moment, each hair on her pelt sticking up like a hedgehog. No, Leopardrose can't see me like this. She can't see me freak out. She pushed ahead, ignoring the nagging feeling at the back of her head as they approached the sound. All she could see ahead was branches and brambles, a reassuring sight that helped Coyotepaw lay her fur flat. She gave her chest a quick groom, cleaning up any stray tufts.
It was when Leopardrose sat down that the night black path came to view, its long, snake-like body sending memories flooding back to Coyotepaw, of a tiny lilac kit clinging helplessly to her mother's still body. She never got to say goodbye. Leopardrose's words faded in her ears. She felt bad, she was trying to listen but everything was coming back all at once. What was Leopardrose saying? Something about protecting our side, and adapting to being apart of it, despite coming from the other? She knew the words were important, but the rumbling, buzzing sound from her mind was getting louder and she just snapped.
Her ears pinned to the back of her head, and she sharply turned to face Leopardrose while backing away into the bushes with her hackles raised. 'What are you doing! Are you trying to kill me?! Why would you take me here?!' She screeched, claws unseathed and at the ready. Coyotepaw's eyes were wide and dilated, filled with nothing but fear, but she wasn't even looking at Leopardrose anymore. All her fear was directed towards the thunderpath. Some sort of sob escaped from Coyotepaw, and it felt like her entire body was weakened. She hid amidst the bushes, her eyes trained on the path.

Leopardrose flinched as the apprentice shouted, her heart twisting at the raw fear and pain in her apprentice’s voice. The screech of terror, the sharp scent of panic - she had seen this before, in herself, long ago. She remained still, her aqua eyes soft as she watched Coyotepaw retreat into the brambles.
“Coyotepaw...” Leopardrose began gently, her voice low and soothing. She didn’t move closer, not wanting to crowd the younger cat. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize how much this place would hurt you. I thought… well, I see now that I’ve brought back something you didn’t deserve to face again.”
She took a slow breath, her gaze flickering to the Thunderpath. The sight of it stirred unease in her too, a reminder of the strange unpredictable cruelty of the Twoleg world. “You’re not alone in this. I know what it’s like to carry something too big for your heart to hold. You’re not wrong to feel this way...”
Leopardrose hesitated, weighing her words, before she let herself be vulnerable. She began to retreat. “When I was just a kit, my home wasn’t like ThunderClan. It was…different. My mother was strong, so much stronger than I’ll ever be. She did everything she could to protect me and my littermates, but one day, it wasn’t enough. A fire took my my home... and my siblings. All three of them.”
Her voice wavered as the memories washed over her, vivid even now. “My mother… she carried me through it all. Burned and weak, she dragged me to ThunderClan’s border. She never made it to safety, but she made sure I did. ThunderClan saved me that day, took me in when I had nothing. But it didn’t erase what I’d lost... It never will.”
Leopardrose’s gaze returned to Coyotepaw, filled with understanding. "I know what it’s like to be angry at the world, to feel like you’re carrying too much and it's not fair. I won’t pretend to know your pain exactly, but I’ll never judge you for it. And I’ll never push you to face more than you’re ready for again.”

Still backing into the bushes, Coyotepaw's gaze slowly focused on Leopardrose as she spoke. Not a single part of her calmed down though. Ever since gaining her new name, Coyotepaw had subconsciously been avoiding this area of ThunderClan's territory, and now she had been made very aware as to why. It couldn't be like this forever though, she had to overcome it. Maybe just not today.
While she still couldn't fully focus properly, she listened to her mentor's words intently. Her mentor really was just like her in nearly every way possible. The orange hue in her eyes grew a little brighter as she held Leopardrose's gaze, properly this time. 'Before I came here, my mother and my siblings were the only thing I knew. My father was merely more than a familiar scent. Belladonna was her name. I don't remember much about her anymore, other than her smokey black pelt that I would cuddle up too each night, and the warmth of her scent. She did everything for us, she gave up her free, adventurous life to take care of us. All she wanted to do was make an impact on the world, and her children. That path down there took everything from her, and it took everything from me. I'm sorry about your mother, but I think it's really nice to look up to them. Our dams did their absolute everything to give us a life we deserve.' She hesitated for a moment, taking a look at the Thunderpath again. The embarrassment from lashing out at Leopardrose was sinking in now, but it's not like she could have done anything to control it.
'Sorry for ruining your lesson. I just.. I'm not ready to be here yet. I can't stop the memories. They consume me. One day we can come back here. I want you to be there when I can come here, but not today. I need time, just like I'm sure you did.' She had been talking a lot more than she usually would, and noticed her ears start to pin pack.

Leopardrose listened in silence, her gaze steady and filled with a rare softness as Coyotepaw opened up, her voice trembling with the weight of memories. When the young apprentice spoke of her mother and the sacrifices she'd made. Their stories, though different in shape, mirrored one another in loss and love.
"Belladonna sounds like she was an incredible cat." Leopardrose murmured, her voice warm but low, as if speaking louder would break the fragile moment between them. "To give up so much for her kits… that’s strength no cat can ever repay. I think she'd be proud of you, Coyotepaw, for honoring her memory and for trying to carry on despite the pain."
Leopardrose let the silence linger briefly, giving Coyotepaw space to gather her thoughts. She dipped her head slightly when the apprentice apologized, her aqua eyes holding a quiet reassurance. "You don’t have to apologize. You didn’t ruin anything. Some lessons… they take more time to face. And that’s okay."
The warrior rose to her paws slowly, careful not to make any sudden moves. Her pelt brushed against a bramble, sending a faint shiver through the frosted branches, but she ignored the chill. "You’re right. I needed time too. A lot of it." Her gaze flicked back to the Thunderpath, sharp with both fear and resolve. "The first time I was brought here, I felt like my heart was going to claw its way out of my chest. I thought I’d never stop feeling afraid. But… I had cats who believed in me. And now, you have me, and you have Bravesong. When you’re ready, we’ll face this place together."
