Sunstrike had found herself slowly gravitating towards the nursery over the past moon, checking up on the walls and sorting out moss - and that was before Wildcry and Stormfall had spent time fixing it with feathers and more brambles. Now she was a resident and not entirely unhappy about it. Her announcement to the clan had gone somewhat smoothly - her mother took it as well as she thought she would - but Sunstrike didn't really worry about Quailcall's attitude and overbearing presence.

And now? Well, then a cat starts to waddle around camp more than walk its probably a good time for her to not do too much physical labour.

Sunstrike stretched out in front of the dark entrance to the den, enjoying the last bit of pleasant weather before it truly turned to Leafbare. She hadn't had a great sleep - on account of the kitten's trying to stretch their legs - but she didn't feel anger or anxiety. Quite the opposite. Whenever they moved she felt a rush of love, stronger than she thought possible.

It really was only a matter of time until she got to meet them. And she was almost half as excited as Wrentalon seemed to be. Speaking of which... there was a matter she wanted to ask him about. She glanced around the camp, hopeful he was still around.

Spawn of flame, Thunder-struck, from the ashes I rise
──●◎●──

Leopardrose had been lingering near the edge of camp, absently grooming her sleek pelt, but her gaze kept drifting to the nursery. The sight of Sunstrike stretched out in front of the den caught her attention more than usual today. The she-cat’s pregnancy was becoming increasingly noticeable, and while Leopardrose didn’t know her too well, she had always felt a quiet sense of kinship. Both of them had borne the weight of family expectations.

Her gaze flicked to Sunstrike's rounded belly, a mix of curiosity and unease bubbling up inside her. The idea of becoming a mother was something that Leopardrose had never really dwelled on - it unsettled her, honestly - but there was something about the way Sunstrike carried herself that was... admirable. Brave, even, regarding the choice itself and the harm it could bring.

For a moment, Leopardrose hesitated, unsure if she should approach. What would she even say? She had no idea what to talk about when it came to kits or motherhood. But something in Sunstrike’s peaceful expression, the way she seemed to radiate contentment despite the changes her life was going through, made Leopardrose want to at least try.

Taking a breath, Leopardrose padded over, her movements smooth and confident despite the small knot of uncertainty in her chest. As she neared, she dipped her head in greeting, offering a small smile. “Sunstrike.” She meowed softly, her voice light. “I hope you don’t mind me joining you for a bit. It’s been a while since I’ve had a quiet moment to myself, and well... you seem to be enjoying the calm."

She settled down near her, giving Sunstrike a sideways glance. Her gaze softened slightly, her earlier reservations about motherhood pushed aside for now. “How are you feeling about... everything? It must be a lot to process.”

Leopardrose's approach went somewhat unnoticed by Sunstrike until the last moment, almost startling her. While she and the spotted cat were around the same age they had never really spoken. Although Sunstrike did feel there was something similar about the two of them - never really fitting in within the clan. Her request to join Sunstrike was kindof unexpected - as was her question. She didn't necessarily feel nearly as calm as she looked apparently. Although maybe it was by comparison to her usual self.

"Oh, no please." She scooted over so Leopardrose could have a share of the sunlight. She looked out across the clan trying to put her thoughts in order. "I. I'm happy with how things have turned out. You know, I'm really not a great warrior like my kin - not really aggressive. A lot of my training, kit-hood and life in general has been dictated by others. As expected, but..."

She instinctively groomed her paws - her fur had not exactly healed but the herbs that Tigerrush had prescribed helped a bit with her anxiety. Or it was just the changes in her in general that helped.

"This is something in my life that I chose, with no one able to argue with me or judge me. My dame can't influence me, my mentor can't influence me. Wrentalon can't influence me - unless I ask for his input." Her tone was lighter at the mention of her chosen sire. She appreciated his agreement and input on her scheming. "Plus, it doesn't require violence or aggression. Just the opposite in-fact." She stopped her sentence as one of the kits wiggled - it was probably quite cramped in there. She purred as she continued, somewhat conspiratorially "Just, affection and time and love - plus it's nice to not have to patrol for a little bit. You actually do get to enjoy the 'calm' as you say."

Leopardrose settled into the sunlight next to Sunstrike, appreciating the warmth as she listened to her words. She hadn’t known much about the other she-cat’s life beyond the occasional observation, but hearing Sunstrike speak so candidly struck a chord within her. Leopardrose could relate to the feeling of living under the expectations of others, always trying to live up to a standard that had never quite been her own.

She flicked an ear, thoughtful as Sunstrike explained how this moment in her life was one she’d taken control of, something chosen for herself without interference. The quiet strength behind that decision - the freedom to live as she wished, even in a way that defied the usual expectations for warriors - was impressive.

"To make such a big decision purely for yourself - no one else influencing it... I think that’s something a lot of us wish we could do."

She fell silent, reflecting on her own life for a moment. Leopardrose had always felt the pressure to prove herself, to show her clanmates that she was worthy, especially being born an outsider. Her choices had always been shadowed by that need for approval, and she wondered if she’d ever be brave enough to take that step purely for herself, the way Sunstrike had.

"It sounds like you've found something special. And, you're right - few things are more exhausting than tiptoeing around Wildcry, Gingerthrash, and Quailcall. I can’t imagine how nice it must be to finally take a step back and focus on something as... this." She hesitated, then added. "I admire that. I’m not sure I could be that brave."

Wrentalon trotted back into camp, a freshly killed mouse clamped carefully in his jaws. It had been a good while since Thunderclan had had any queens, but Sunstrike was progressing nicely, as far as he could tell. His sister seemed pleased so far, which was a good sign.

He headed over to the nursery as Sunstrike and Leopardrose were chatting, catching something about Sunstrike's kin and bravery. He held back his own comments on those elders' constant disapproval, instead placing the mouse down beside the orange-and-white she-cat. "Afternoon," he greeted, settling down beside her with a nod to Leopardrose. He nudged the mouse toward Sunstrike. "Everything still going well? Have you eaten yet?"

He'd been trying to be reasonable with checking up on her, leaving most of that to Tigerrush or other queens who actually knew what was best. But still, he knew his friend to be a rather nervous cat, and with leaf-bare coming soon, her health needed to be strong.

"I don't think I'm brave. Just fed up." She laughed as Leopardrose agreed with her about her kin. "Right!? I hate it when Wildcry and Gingerthrash go out to hunt. It feels somehow worse than if an enemy warrior attacked me when I'm out on patrol. At least I could send them back to their clan with missing chunks of fur. Not so much if it's my grandfather and aunt. There was this one time I got stuck-" Sunstrike didn't get the chance to finish her story with the tree-incident before a fresh mouse was dropped in front of her paws.

Looking up, it was just the cat she wanted to see. Blinking at Wrentalon as he settled down, she purred at him. "This morning, I had a mouse." She gently bapped the rodent with her paw. "But maybe it will convince them to stop practising hunting?" There wasn't an ounce of annoyance in her voice.

Wrentalon had left her alone for the most part over the past few moons beyond checking in occasionally. She had a feeling his sister has a lot to do with it - and his respect for her. But that also meant he hadn't ever really felt the kits move and she did want to share that strange experience with him. It was partially his fault after all. Sunstrike gently guided his paw over to her belly, where the kits still seemed to be wrestling. She could certainly still feel them anyways.

Turning to Leopardrose, she continued. "If you want to check that mouse for that green mush, I'll share. But I don't think you have to rush this sort of thing. You are a good warrior in your own right Leopardrose. This isn't the only means to that end - you can stand toe-to-toe with my cousins. There will be a moment when you can shine. Regardless of what others think."

Spawn of flame, Thunder-struck, from the ashes I rise

Leopardrose couldn’t help but smile at Sunstrike’s laughter, feeling the tension ease between them as they bonded over their shared grievances with overbearing relatives. She was about to ask about the tree incident when Wrentalon appeared, and her attention shifted as he placed the mouse down and greeted them. She offered him a small nod, her gaze flicking between the two as their easy exchange filled the air with warmth.

Leopardrose observed the way Sunstrike guided Wrentalon’s paw to her belly. There was something strangely captivating about watching the two interact - Sunstrike’s gentle affection and Wrentalon’s quiet support. It made Leopardrose feel like an outsider, though she was still genuinely happy for her clanmate.

At Sunstrike’s offer to share the mouse and her words of encouragement, Leopardrose blinked in surprise. She hadn’t expected Sunstrike to say something so... kind. "Sure I'll check. Can't be too careful." she replied with a faint, awakard chuckle.

Sunstrike's next words hit a little deeper, though, and Leopardrose's smile faltered slightly. The idea that she didn’t have to rush into something like this - that there were other ways to prove herself - felt like a balm to an insecurity she hadn’t realized had been nagging at her so much. She pawed the mouse close, tearing into its stomach cavity until she was certain there wasn't poison. "Maybe you're right." she murmured. "It’s hard not to feel like I have to do something drastic to stand out... but maybe I’ve been going about it the wrong way. Here you can have the first half."

Leopardrose’s gaze shifted to Wrentalon, watching him for a moment as he focused on Sunstrike, and then back to the she-cat beside her. "You’re lucky you have one another."

Wrentalon blinked as Sunstrike guided his paw. His eyes widened at the unexpected, strange twitching sensation he felt through her fur. "That's so--!" He couldn't come up with an accurate word. Strange? Exciting? Wonderful? He tucked his paws under himself as she spoke to Leopardrose again.

He gave his head a quick shake. He hadn't been entirely sure what the conversation between the she-cats had been before he sat down, but still he replied, "You're a good warrior, nothing drastic needed. This is just...what Sunstrike felt was right to do. Even if the kits will be born during leaf-bare." He did regret not thinking enough ahead to account for that fact. Kits were fragile, and who knew what a freeze might do to them? It wasn't time to worry just yet, though--they'd solve that problem when they came to it.

He looked back to Sunstrike, glancing at her belly. He could still feel the odd movement, even as he rested on his own paws. "Does that--is it happening all the time? They're just moving around in here?" He couldn't imagine having that constantly happen in his belly.
