Who

Pebbleshine & Brackenwing

What

A little interaction between mother and child

Where

Elders den (possibly outside of camp as well)

Day

6

Pebbleshine lay within the depths of the elder's den, the scarred side of her face hidden against the shadows as her one remaining eye wearily glanced at the entrance of the den. She liked to make herself busy around camp, but the weather had dampened her mood so she confined herself to her nest. She wondered if maybe one of her children might visit today. It felt like ages since she last saw any of them, despite Specklenose's frequent visits. They seemed to be more engrossed in Emberdust as of lately, but she was happy for her son nonetheless.

Brackenwing on the other paw was much more independent than their siblings, taking to a more reserved life compared to her other two. They had a special little rock which Pebbleshine found very adorable, and she often liked to observe her children in action, proud of the way they had grown and developed into their own bodies and personalities. She looked out towards the center of camp once more with longing before turning her head away, sighing at herself. Resting her head on her paws, Pebbleshine closed her eye, wishing the day away hoping she might just sleep the entire afternoon to ignore her slight misery.

"Trust in what you do best, and the result can bring a surprise"
‹‹♦‹✺‹♦✺♦›✺›♦››

Brackenwing padded into camp through the tunnel entrance. They've returned with two medium-sized rats in their maw, carrying it to the fresh-kill pile. As they stretch up to the pile and place down the rats on it, Brackenwing would think about taking a break since they're done hunting for now. The brown-striped warrior turned their head to look at the dens afar. When their glancing captures the elder's den they thought of their parent, Pebbleshine, guessing she must've been there for a while.

Although they had just sat down, about to lick away the small scratch marks on their shoulder, Brackenwing stayed on their paws. It's decided that they want to visit Pebbleshine, and maybe even stay to chat with her. Their head slowly pokes in firstly, scanning inside to see where she is.

As they do see a long-haired figure at the depths of this den, it makes their eyes soften and relieved to find her. "Pebbleshine?...Its me, Brackenwing, do you mind some company?" they asked quietly. Waiting for a response from Pebbleshine before they could walk up to her.

Before the silvery she-cat could fall back into her deep slumber, the familiar voice of one of her kits called from outside the elder's den. A soft purr rumbled from her throat as she saw Brackenwing's head peer into the den. Her blue eye softened, glad to see her children still remembered her. Not that she thought they wouldn't, it was more that they all seemed so busy with their lives as warriors, a life that Pebbleshine was supposed to share with them until a hawk cut things short.

'Of course I want some company, all I want to do is go out, but for some reason I never seem to leave it either. Come sit, your fur is a little ruffled. Have you been out this morning?' If and when Brackenwing walked up to her, she gentled guided her child to lie down beside her, giving their head a few licks, flattening down the fur. Once that was all flat, she moved onto their face, grooming off a few dusty specks. She was more comfortable around Brackenwing compared to some of the others, so she turned her scared face away from the shadowy wall. There was no point in hiding from her own children, especially when she loved them so dearly.

They did eventually walk up to Pebbleshine and then followed her guide to lie down beside her. Brackenwing would purr when their dam had given them a quick clean, flattening down inches of fur they didn't have time to groom. The warrior gives an affectionate lick to her forehead as a thanks for grooming their fur down. It made them suddenly feel sympathetic for Pebbleshine, when she showed her full face to them, with their expressions softened in the moment.

"Hmm...yeah I've been out of camp. Hunted around the Ratfields this morning, faced a ton of feisty rats over there, but at least I brought back two rats after" they answered. Yeah although it was cold out at the rat fields, those rats still attacked them at their paws and shoulder as defense. Leaving small scratch marks on those specific areas.

Ratfields? That was an interesting choice, but it made sense, in leafbare at least. She titled her head slightly at her kit, giving them a curious look. 'You are careful around there right? I know you are very much capable, but sometimes those rats can swarm you, and not even the strongest warrior can escape. I'm just.. worried. I don't want anything happening to you, okay?' Pebbleshine had now noticed the small scratch marks on Brackenwing's shoulders, leaning down to give them a few tender licks. They needed a good clean, especially if they were to fight of any infection.

'You should go see Flutterdream for some herbs later. They might be small, but rats carry many diseases.' Brackenwing likely knew all of this, but she reminded them anyway, a way to reassure herself about her children's safety. Despite her worries, she was glad that Brackenwing was out doing things and hunting for the clan, even taking on solo patrols. A surge of pride welled within her chest as she pulled Brackenwing a little closer, wrapping her feathery tail around them. 'How's life as a warrior? I know you graduated a few moons ago, but to me it feels like forever. I hope you are still spending time with everyone else while doing your clan duties. It is just as important.' Pebbleshine decided to stop speaking, for at this point it just sounded like she was lecturing them, and that was not what she wanted. She just wanted to hear about her kits life and how they were travelling. Her parental instincts were kicking in and it was frankly quite annoying. 'Sorry, enough lecturing from me... You are doing perfectly fine!' She said with a purr, affectionately ruffling up the fur on their head she had just neatened up with her paw. 'Thanks for coming to see me though, I really appreciate it.'

"Trust in what you do best, and the result can bring a surprise"
‹‹♦‹✺‹♦✺♦›✺›♦››

"Hm. Suppose I should have these scratch marks checked with Flutterdream sometime" giving Pebbleshine an appreciative dip for cleaning the scratch marks. Brackenwing felt bad they had made her so worried, with them dealing with tough solo patrols they grew to handle on their own, and overall taking warrior duties very seriously. Their expressions softened once more as they watched Pebbleshine draw them closer to her.
Her question leaves them puzzled, taking their time piecing up one or three experiences they do remember most. "Life as a warrior? well it sure isn't simple haha, but so far it's alright! Specklenose and Emberdust, I still connect with those two, but it seemed the both are awfully a lot..closer recently?" shrugged as they mentioned the new behavior. Brackenwing does acknowledge how common their sibling and Emberdust shares, but hadn't thought of them being more than just friends.

Their eyes blink with care and understanding, not ever bothered by what Pebbleshine has in mind of asking them with concern. Moving their tail wrapped around her own tail. "You're good, Pebbleshine. I do appreciate hearing the concerns you have for me, even if I had done things well on my own" they say with a deep purr. "And you're welcome. The next time there is no duty for the time, I'll be sure to come visit again. Hmmm even have a nice walk with you outside! Is that alright?"

'Specklenose and Emberdust you say... I'm glad to hear you still talk to your sibling, and some of your old denmates too. I wouldn't want you isolating yourself. But.. what exactly do you mean by closer? They have always been good friends.' Pebbleshine pretty much knew what Brackenwing meant. She always watched her children from afar, and those two had always had a special bond, which had grown stronger over their moons as warriors. She gave Brackenwing a slight grin with a hint of mischief. She wouldn't know for sure until she got confirmation from her kit, but a mother's instincts were always very strong.

As Brackenwing's tail was placed down over her own, she felt her heart surge, just like it had done when her kits were first born. Oh how she loved her kits so much. Specklenose was always a little over the top, similar to their brother. Brackenwing on the other paw was always a little different, and she loved them for that. They were the calm amidst the storm of her other two children. 'We can go for a little walk now if you have the time. I haven't been out in a while. A stretch of the legs would probably be good for me.'

Brackenwing nods, indicating that they are willing to take a stroll outside with Pebbleshine. They gently scratch the itch coming from the scratch marks with their foot before getting up from the spot. "Of course, a good leg stretch is necessary for the body. It doesn't look too dark yet so I'm sure the weather won't be that cold for now" as they say. They walked over to the entrance and turned their body to face her, waiting patiently for Pebbleshine. Looking forward to continuing their conversations while having in mind of sharing the rats they managed to bring back with their dam.
