Briarfang had been sitting on the other side of the river, enjoying a good fish hunt in the heat of the day. They had managed to pull out a few small fish, which now lay dead beside them on the bank, when a rather loud yelp startled the rest in the river. Briarfang lifted their head from the water, holding back a growl as they looked for the source of the ruckus, and to their surprise, a red cat was climbing a tree. Well, almost. Briarfang watched as the warrior struggled, somehow caught half-up in the branches. Letting out an amused purr, Briarfang sat back on the river bank. They had gotten a decent catch. Why not watch how this played out?

WRENTALON
Wrentalon stalked his prey quietly: a plump blue jay flitting in between the foliage ahead of him. He stayed still, silent, holding himself back from scratching the itch in his paws and leaping forward just yet. Patience was key, no matter how much he hated to admit it. His hazel eyes were wide, trained on the bird as he ever so slowly advanced closer and closer, his tail twitching with anticipation.
And then a loud, crashing sound echoed through the woods. The blue jay squaked out a warning cry and disappeared in a flash of feathers. Growling, Wrentalon turned toward the source of the noise. He stalked towards Sunningrocks, snapping, "What in Starclan's name is--"
The sight he saw cut him off completely. Sunstrike was dangling rather unfortunately from a bowed-over sapling. His fellow warrior struggled and kicked, to no avail. "Oh dear," he meowed, dumbfounded. He stared, utterly confused, and holding back a spurt of laughter, as he pieced together what she had gotten herself into. "What did you do?"

Every paw step drew her deeper into thunderclan territory. The land that her ancestors fought tooth and claws to maintain. A long history of border skirmishes fought over the prized sunning rocks, and since now thunderclan effortlessly thwarted any wet-furred attempt made by riverclan schemers to take what was theirs by right.
So, Wildcry had every indication of taking advantage of the warm weather and do a bit of sunning herself. Her limbs carried her through the thick of the forest, every inch known to her - it was a comforting feeling, it felt powerful too. Prey wasn't far from her mind either. Eventually she would see if hunting proved fruitful, but for now, a quick nap in the sun would be energizing enough to turn to such tasks after.
As she stepped into the clearing, though, leading up to the dappled, bare rocks near the shore facing riverclan, Wildcry stopped short when she saw the puzzling form of a seemingly trapped Sunstrike. She inhaled sharply, tisking as her eyes scanned the border - the secondhand embarrassment for the cat quickly calling to see if anyone else was privy to the incident. When her single eye caught the appearance of a riverclan cat - a mangy looking tortie - oogling the affair, Wildcry bristled.
"Why don't you shove your head underwater and mind your own flea-bitten business."
Wildcry wanted trouble.

Of course. of course. Why not have not only two of the most uptight cats in Thunderclan come and find her in such a predicament, but another clan cat as well... She at least still had it in her to half-heatedly hiss at the 'interloper', although it likely didn't have the intended effect. "Well I actually didn't do Anything." She shot back at Wrentalon. He did have to right to laugh but she also didn't want to admit how much it bothered her. "I was minding my own business, hunting a squirrel and Starclan decided I deserve punishment for some perceived error in my ways."
She attempted to shake her foot free once again and almost stopped herself from rolling her eyes at Wildcry. Sunstrike could only hope that a border dispute didn't start while she was strung up like a bundle of herbs...
"Wildcry, they are on their side. Unless you are going to take up fishing, do you mind not starting fights while I'm a sitting duck over here?"

WRENTALON
The sight had nearly made Wrentalon forget his frustration over losing his prey. Until Wildcry came onto the rocks and immediately started growling. When Sunstrike gave a small hiss, Wrentalon looked across the river, and his fur bristled as he saw a dark-furred Riverclan warrior settled into the shade of the trees, watching them like a spectacle. He joined in with a quick hiss, then turned around with a lash of his tail. "She's right, Wildcry," he grumbled after Sunstrike again plead for help. "Let's get her down before that water-logged flea-brain has anything to say about it."
Struggling to reach, he managed to close his jaws around one of the branches, and started pulling as hard as he could.

BRIARFANG
Look at them, grown cats throwing a fit over there. Whiskers twitching in amusement, Briarfang sniffed at the Thunderclan warriors. Bunch of kits, the lot of them. The tortoiseshellΒ cat relaxed on their side of the river, quite content to enjoy the show. Besides, if any of those three fell in, there was no doubt that someone would have to keep them from drowning. Judging by their...well, lack of judgement, they were all just as likely to be washed downstream without an experienced swimmer's help. Besides, this was the most entertaining thing Briarfang had seen in a while.

Wildcry kept a wary eye on the cat on the other side of the river. At any moment they could decide that a trapped cat distracting her clanmates would be the perfect time to invade and start trouble. Still, without any physical transgression, she couldn't rectify any problem - so, she turned towards her clanmates. "I'm not the one embarrassing their clan by being seen in such circumstances." Her tone was not unlike the tone she might have taken towards her children, as she padded towards the ensnared she-cat. With a snarl of disapproval, she circled to the opposite side of Wrentalon, mouth biting down on other branch. She waited until the tom pulled, and she heaved in tandem.

With Wilcry and Wrentalon's help, Sunstrike finally had enough leverage to yank her foot free. Thank goodness - finally she had all four feet on the ground.
Yet even with the joy of being freed, Wildcry's comment dug at her skin. She really would never be good enough for any of her family. It wasn't like she had climbed that tree with the intention of getting stuck. Still they had helped her - which might not be surprising for Wrentalon, but was a little bit shocking that there hadn't been more chastising on Wildcry's part before freeing her.
She dipped her head, trying to at least get Wildcry to leave her alone. "Thanks. I can continue hunting. Sorry for disturbing you." In an effort to be as small and unnoticeable as possible, Sunstrike tried her best to get her hackles to lie flat.

Wrentalon shook out his fur as he let the branch go, shooting a rueful glare over at the Riverclan warrior across the way. He couldn't help but allow for a hint of disapproval to come through in his tone, lashing his tail with the knowledge that the enemy was still keeping an eye on them for whatever reason. "Perhaps it'd be better not to chase squirrels up trees." He looked up at the young sapling, rather thin and flexible. "Especially not ones like these." He himself was never much for climbing trees, lacking some of the agility needed for such a task that he was certain Sunstrike probably had. She probably could have caught the squirrel if it had chosen a sturdier, less...angry tree to escape into.

Wildcry studied the tiny sapling that held her clanmate with ire in her eyes. Wildcry was an avid climber despite her size - she'd never consider trying to scale something as feeble as this, or chase anything through its branches. It was like she had caught a kit in the act, and Wildcry scowled at the she-cat as she tried to shrug them off. "If I hadn't seen your blunder with my own eyes I would have never believed it. Next time you get stuck, make sure it's in the heart of the territory where only your clanmates can see your shame. Honestly... What kind of forest hunter are you?" She shook her head, disappointment evident in her voice. Never in her life had she, in her explorations, and independent hunts did she ever find herself off her feet in such a way. Took a tumble from a tree, once or twice perhaps, but nothing like this. She wondered if Quailcall would believe her daughter's shortcoming, or if it was something she came to expect all the time. She turned towards the younger cats, single eye equally stern as she assessed Wrentalon, who, together, had worked seamlessly in helping Sunstrike. "Why don't you make sure she gets back on all four feet." She suggested before her paw falls trotted in the direction of her original destination. She needed the sun to bleach the irritation from her pelt.

Sunstrike let the insults roll over her like a wave. She had come to expect them at this point - from her mother and kin. Wildcry was right and she hated it. Her eyes flicked over to the resting Riverclan cat and then back at the ground, unable to muster up a defence.
As Wildcry stalked off, Sunstrike waited for Wrentalon to speak, still hunched over. "Do you have any blows to add? I'm certain Wildcry would love for you to mentor me like a kit." She wasn't angry at him... or maybe she was. A little bit. He was one of the favoured of the older warriors and elders. Him and Savagefox - unable to do anything wrong.
It made her want to be sick. Or scream. Or maybe both. Either way she expected further 'tutoring' from her fellow warrior.

Wrentalon's tail tip twitched at Wildcry's lashing. He remembered far too well being on the recieving end of those during his apprenticeship, having grown more or less numb to the insults. Sunstrike, evidently, still had some sort of resentment. Wrentalon couldn't blame her; he hadn't been completely blind to the sharpness of her mother's tongue, and was all too aware of Wildcry's.
Β
His pelt still prickled under the gaze of that Riverclan warrior. He turned around to snap, "Fun's over, fish-breath! Go on home!" before looking back at Sunstrike. He stared at her as she muttered a dejected question. His whiskers twitched at her own self-insult. "You're not a kit," he said, somewhat bitterly. "And Wildcry's not your mentor."

BRIARFANG
Oh well, Briarfang thought. I thought that take last a little longer. They got to thier paws an stretched, opening their jaws wide in a yawn, and then looked back at their small morsels of fish. They could stand to catch a couple more. Digging out a shallow scrape in the bank, they buried what they'd already caught--they'd come back for it later. They took a few paces down the river, still keeping the odd Thunderclan warriors in sight, and settled back in to fish.
Then why does she always act like it? What did I do to get on her bad side all the time? Sunstrike wanted to ask - but she knew the answer. Somehow it always came back to Sparrowpaw. What was she going to do for him - carry him to safety? Guess she would never know now.
Sunstrike stood, and gently headbutted Wrentalon. "You are a good warrior. I hope you know that." She started off in the direction of camp - hopefully she would find prey before her paws reached her destination. "I wouldn't mind if you had been my mentor." With a flick of her tail, she disappeared into the foliage.

Wrentalon had no idea how to respond, but she was gone before he could say anything, anyway. He couldn't help but feel a sort of pity for Sunstrike. Ever since her brother had been killed, she had seemed as if she were missing something. As if she was wounded somewhere deep under the surface, and harsh words only served to make it worse. Every snap from Quailcall or Wildcry or any of the other older warriors for that matter seemed to sting her badly. He didn't know why it seemed so...tiring to observe. Was tiring the right word?
With a sigh, he continued his activities from before, leaving the river behind, and he found himself wishing he had the healing skills of his sister.
