After agreeing to take a walk, Pebbleshine and Brackenwing trudged their way out of camp. The silvery she-cat made sure to walk so that her child was on her blind side. It was safer for her that way, an would minimise the risks of any accidents. The air was icy against her throat, but it was a welcome change to the more stuffy atmosphere of camp. Long, thick for would forever be something Pebbleshine would be grateful for. Brackenwing's wounds still seemed to be irritating them, but she didn't want to push her child. Instead she would just check up on them tomorrow, making sure they got them checked out with her sister. A little bit of blood crusted around Brackenwing's shoulder, leading Pebbleshine's thoughts to something entirely new. Brackenwing was her child, her kit just as much as Specklenose was. She felt as though she was the one who had carried them in her belly and birthed them alongside her other two kits. Unlike Specklenose though, Brackenwing shared no blood with her, no looks, nothing at all. The two couldn't be more different. She never cared, but what did Brackenwing think? Would they ever truly be her child? As they padded side by side, Pebbleshine made the decision to do a gentle inquiry, 'Brackenwing? Do you ever wonder about your real parents? What the life they could have given you could have been like? Sometimes I just worry that I am not what you hoped for... In my eyes you are forever my kit, just like Specklenose, but am I really your mother to you?' She felt bad for the sudden turn of conversation, but since looking at her kits wound she couldn't shake off the feeling that they would never share blood, and who that mattered too. Blood didn't matter to Pebbleshine, but what did it mean to everyone else?

"Trust in what you do best, and the result can bring a surprise"
‹‹♦‹✺‹♦✺♦›✺›♦››

Brackenwing was just thinking about the surroundings in the forest plains until they heard Pebbleshine speak. 'Huh. My real parents?...' as they think for the moment, turning their head to look at her. The itchy feeling coming from their small wounds didn't distract them from thinking of a way to respond.

"Uhh not really. I don't think I've ever...thought about wondering about it. Even if I would, it's...the wonder of what happened to them." Their tongue is starting to feel dry as if it wants to reenter in their mouth, with the discomfort of answering much more. But when Pebbleshine said her last sentences, that helped them know what to answer again. "Oh Pebbleshine, please don't think too hard about that now. I believe truly, you've been the only mother to me, even if we don't carry the same genes and looks..." the warrior said with a empathetic tone and soften expression. If it weren't for her to take them in, Brackenwing would've felt alone.

Or worse...a lot colder. Weird, it's as if...they are slowly gaining small bits of a memory and it's blurry. The warrior's eyes scan one more time, in the chilly environment they and Pebbleshine are at, questioning what's going on in their head.

Pebbleshine looked at her kit a little guiltily. Had she just ruined the moment, spouting her own troubles onto them? Brackenwing's reply told her that they had hardly thought about her questions before, and her muscles relaxed as a sigh escaped her. Even Pebbleshine wasn't exactly sure what had happened to Brackenwing's parents. She just remembered not long after kitting her own litter, she was asked if she could take another in. She didn't even need to see the tiny scrap of fur to say yes. She would take in any kit without a doubt, no matter where they were from. Brackenwing was already a ShadowClan kit though, so really she was just doing a favour for her clanmates that had passed. When she saw the tiny brown kit, she knew exactly what she would name them. Brackenkit, after the plants that were strewn across their territory. A tough plant that perfectly reflected the tough little kit that she now called hers.

Closing her eye for a moment, Pebbleshine took in Brackenwing's words. It was relieving to hear such things, that she really was their mother in Brackenwing's eyes. 'That's all I needed to hear..' she said quietly before continuing forward, her silvery paws tentatively placed on the cold ground. The pair walked together for a few moments of silence before Pebbleshine decided to speak up again, really just wanting to break the silence. 'I don't go out much anymore. I always feel like something will creep up on my blind side, but this is really nice being out here with you.'

Their ears flick as they hear Pebbleshine speak more, making them grin with their fangs showing. Looking eager to keep their interactions with her no matter where the two are at. "Yeah, it's good to be with you outside. Bit unfortunate how it's gotten much colder, but at least we can observe and explore enough together." After sharing that, they do sight a figure on one of the trees. It made their head tilt as they couldn't tell what kind of bird it is. This doesn't sit right with the warrior so they halt, ears perked up, and their eyes kept at that particular tree.

Brackenwing didn't want to alarm Pebbleshine from what they were looking at, so they spoke, "Pebbleshine uh. What are your thoughts on the newly apprentices? Being at their ceremony...reminds me of my time as an apprentice" although that was awhile ago, they do want to see her views in it. Taking a gaze at Pebbleshine with a calm expression. While keeping their ears rise up and alert for the strange figure they've seen.

'I come from a family of long, thick pelts so leafbare doesn't bother me too much. Your sibling on the other paw hates it. He has the same coat as me, yet never stops complaining about how cold it is. Sometimes I think they don't actually feel it, but he just wants an excuse to complain' she said with a snort. Specklenose could be overly dramatic, although most of the time her kit was doing so to put a smile on another's face.

While Pebbleshine couldn't see as well as before, her ears worked fine, and the gentle rustle from a tree caught her attention. It wasn't enough for her to take a look, but her ear twitched in recognition. 'Ah, those three rascals. I haven't seen a name change in a while but I think Duskpaw suits the kid. He seems very... different? Not in a bad way, he just seems more intense compared to his brothers. Y'know, you are kind of similar to Duskpaw in both loosing your mothers, perhaps you should talk to him sometime. Anyway, I have hopes for all three, as long as they keep out of trouble.' Pebbleshine could still remember the day her kits became apprentices. It was bittersweet, but she couldn't have been more proud. Unfortunately, her kits were troublemakers and one of them ended up with a permanent injury due to messing around in another clan's territory. Brackenwing was always a good kid though, it was the other two that caused problems.

They grin with amusement when Specklenose is mentioned, knowing well he wouldn't feel as cold as Brackenwing does in this time of weather. Pebbleshine was right about him, he would find ridiculous things to complain about to bring both of them to smile. Brackenwing doesn't know a lot about the apprentice, but they nod to her that they'll give it a try, engaging with enough clanmates will have them learn more about them. "Yeah. I could try if he is available to speak with."

Noticeably a scent has caught up to the warrior's nose, coming from those trees beside them and Pebbleshine. The prey must be a mouse ... Brackenwing guesses. This brings intentions for the warrior to hunt down that prey and bring it back with their Dam to camp. "Hey..think theres a mouse through those trees. I'll be careful and be back if I can catch it, but feel free to follow too, Pebbleshine." Giving their Dam a reassuring nod, they head over the direction, where the mouse scent lies.

'A mouse in a tree? You don't see that too often, are you sure?' She asked, giving her kit a curious look before turning her singular blue eye to where Brackenwing was looking. She could pick up a few gentle rustles of leaves coming from the area, and with her eye narrowed she could just visibly see the rustles. Focusing too hard on one area was a little disorienting, so she blinked her eye shut, taking a step back as she regained her balance, not wanting to get a dizzy spell from straining her eye. There was definitely something in the tree, though whether it was a mouse, Brackenwing would have to find it first. It was too far away to actively identify by scent, and while she wanted to scale the tree and have a go at hunting, such a task was too risky for a handicapped feline like Pebbleshine.

'Too dangerous for me to go up there. You be careful if you go up there. Come back in one piece, alright?' There was no point in telling her kit not to do something, as no matter how much she didn't want them scaling the tree in pursuit of a 'mouse', they were a fully grown cat and were capable of making their own decisions.

"Trust in what you do best, and the result can bring a surprise"
‹‹♦‹✺‹♦✺♦›✺›♦››

They’ve padded over to the destination Brackenwing was looking for, took a quick gaze up at an old tall oak tree, this is where that mouse prey would have climbed up to. Unsheathing their claws out, they leap onto the tree bark and cling on it. The tree wasn't as tall as the other trees nearby, but Brackenwing is aware that they will have to be prepared to fall back safely. And go back to camp before the sky has gotten darker.
There! It's the mouse, and the small prey has gotten their legs stuck, perfect for the warrior to go over that thick branch and snatch it with no problem. Brackenwing took a couple of steady steps forward, keeping their weight on the branch as it starts getting smaller, and eyes have kept on the trapped mouse.
As they had their paw reach out to the prey, a long-eared owl screech would have been heard not far away from them. It was too late for the warrior to turn back as the long-eared owl had landed its claws on their back. They let out a loud shocked yowl as the warrior felt the owl's claws have deepened in its skin, making them hiss and snarl towards the owl. So frustrated and afraid at the same time, Brackenwing had their body jump off the thick tree branch, with the long-eared owl struggling to let go of the feline's skin as they fell with them.
A loud thud is heard below the old tall oak tree, with the bleeding warrior having their unsheathed claws on the long-eared owl's neck. Without hesitation at the moment, even when the bird screeches and claws at their right-side cheek to leave a scar, their claws deeply swipe the bird's feather coat neck. Painting the ground and the exhausted injured warrior's right-paw.
They now lean towards the old oak tree, taking a couple of breaths as they try ignoring the stinging pain from their wounds, and then get on their paw to pad back to Pebbleshine. Dragging the lifeless long-eared owl.

Trusting that Brackenwing would be fine, she watched as her kit scaled the tree, clinging onto the bark with powerful muscle. She edges closer to the tree, her paws treading across the ground as though it were moss, silent as ever. From this spot the scent of the mouse was now clear, and Pebbleshine was glad to know that the pair wasn't imagining things. Watching her kit's careful movements, the silvery tabby waited with anticipation, ready for Brackenwing to precisely strike at the mouse. Instead, an ear splitting screech pierced through Pebbleshine's ears, causing her fur to puff out instantly. Memories of the attack all those moons ago flooded Pebbleshine's mind, and she found herself shrinking into her body, backing away from the scene as her vision clouded with red, and phantom pain seared through her missing eye.

The elder's head was spinning, heart thumping faster than it had in a long time. It was like she was stuck in place, going through the motions of the hawk attack over and over again. The thing that snapped her out of it was the pained yowl from Brackenwing, sending Pebbleshine back to her paws instantly. Her ears were pinned back with aggressive fury as she prepared to scale the tree and aid Brackenwing, though before she could make a move, Brackenwing had leapt towards the ground, the bird stuck beneath his claws. The pair landed with a sickening crunch, and the ShadowClan warrior finished off the bird with a swipe towards the neck.

Still partly in shock, Pebbleshine stood there for a moment, staring wide eyed at nothing. Her brain was on overdrive until the fear kicked back in and she approached Brackenwing with concerned anger. 'I told you to be careful!' She screeched, ripping the owl away from her kit so she could inspect that it was properly dead. Such behaviour was unusal from Pebbleshine, but it seemed as though the attack from the owl had triggered a unusual response in the silvery she-cat. 'What if you died? You could have lost you eye! You can't turn out like me, you are supposed to have a good life, not one like mine. Look at yourself, those injuries on your back!' She spat, each breath coming out as a struggle. Her blue eyes were trained on Brackenwing, but rather than being filled with anger, they were filled with nothing but fear and pain. She stood in silence for a moment, glaring at her kit before she took a shaky step back, her gaze no refusing to look at Brackenwing's. The words she had just yelled to her beloved kin sunk in, and a strangled sob escaped her mouth as she look to the floor. 'Brackenwing... I- I'm sorry. I shouldn't yell at you like that. I just- I got scared. I don't want to loose you, nor do I want you to be bound to a fate like mine.'

"Trust in what you do best, and the result can bring a surprise"
‹‹♦‹✺‹♦✺♦›✺›♦››

They did not flinch or move, as their stillness stayed that way as they listened to Pebbleshine's angry concerns. She was right...they didn't think thoroughly of their surroundings up there and it happened, must they feel ashamed for putting her in distress. Brackenwing closed their eyes to ease their tension, their muscles ache from the wounds, the warrior then opened their eyes to look at her again. Their eyes dried yet is filled with worry for her as they quietly croaked, "T-there isn't anything you should apologize for, when this has been my fault. I'm...sorry. So sorry. I brought you to remember..such a painful memory from the past." The warriors ears drooped and their eyes looked at their paws silently. It makes them unsure they could be forgiven as much as they forgive Pebbleshine with how she reacted. It's gotten so cold now, their arms are shaky as they try to steady their sitting posture, this...makes them think they've deserved it. Everything that had happened to Brackenwing.
