It wasn't too early in the morning and it wasn't too late (at least not to Hollyclaw), but now that she'd brought Ashpaw out to the swamps, she felt dissatisfied with the decision. Why, she had no idea. There was nothing wrong with the area as far as she could tell. Maybe she was getting ahead of herself, but she had been a mentor for a few moons now and Ashpaw wasn't a slacker in her opinion.
Looking out into across the marshland, Hollyclaw spotted some waterfowl in the distance. They were minding their business, as birds did when there were no immediate threats around. After a slow tail swish of consideration, Hollyclaw tilted her head towards Ashpaw and meowed, "Tell me what you know of ducks and other marshbirds."

Ashpaw followed his mentor carefully, doing all he could to keep his footing solid and secure. He really was too old to do anything so stupid as falling to a swamp he didn’t mean to be in.
His gaze followed his mentors’ as she spoke. The birds on the water were too far away for hunting. ”Ducks float. And dive. It makes them hard to catch because they prefer the water to the land.” Ashpaw gave it a bit more consideration. ”The birds that wade at least stay in by the shore. But the really big ones can be dangerous.” His mind drifted to stories told by elders about the times when massive Herons stalked the swamps and swallowed kits whole.
