The day was young, and Coldgaze had selected those who he trusted to patrol along the border with Thunderclan. Briarfang has been moved to hunting duty for the time being - mainly in the interest of preventing rumours of favouritism rather than any real punishment - and has been replaced with Thornstrike and Cottonbright. As much as he didn't trust the latter, Mintpaw deserved to experience more interesting things than cleaning elder bedding and hunting in the same safe locations.

He trailed along the edge of the rocky drop as his patrol refreshed markers and scanned the other side for Windclan cats. He didn't have to worry about their quick neighbours - his recent confrontation with the other clans a few days ago proved that.

On his patrol was Bloomfire - a cat he has been assured was dedicated to his cause - and Goosesong. An enigma. "The river is treacherous here." He gazed down at the frothy waters below. "Fascinating how something we are know for just as easily steals us away." His voice carried along the path. He glanced up at the larger silver cat. "Something that gives us life just as easily destroys."

24

Who

Surprised that Coldgaze had picked her for his own patrol, but happy nonetheless, Bloomfire padded alongside the deputy, paws careful placed one in front of the other as she walked with a confident air. 'It steals away the weak. Those worthy of living a life by the waters can make it through safely. If you don't manage to make it, I guess the river just deemed you unworthy.' She gave Goosesong a sidewards glance. She very much knew his sister had drowned during the tom's apprenticeship. 'Oh, sorry, guess I forgot.' she said in a deadpan voice, giving Goosesong a little smirk.

She didn't say much else, occasionally straying slightly off path to place a marker of her own. She withheld the temptation to give one of the warriors a gentle shove as the neared the gorge's edge. Not strong enough to push them over, but enough to give them a little spook. But, she didn't for she knew if she did she would likely be greeted back with a sharp tongue and be sent back to camp.

Coldgaze watched the large silver warrior walk away from the group in a huff, shooting a pointed look at Bloomfire as he went. Goosesong would be a valuable ally with his attitude and size being at least somewhat similar to Coldgaze's own. But that would mean approaching the topic of Sunningrocks delicately. He didn't know what Goose thought of Boldstar and... to be honest he wasn't even sure of Boldstar's own opinion on the idea yet.

But that was a problem for another day.

As their third wheel left listening range, Coldgaze sat and look down into the chasm. "Do you truely believe that Bloomfire?" He looked up at her with a neutral expression, curious to see her response. "Or do you say such things to get a rise out of others?"

With the same sidewards glace she had given Goosesong, Bloomfire now looked at Coldgaze, looking him up and down. 'Perhaps. I'm not a spiritual cat. Things happen because they happen. If you drown, you probably just weren't good enough. Harsh, I know. But I'm not exactly wrong, am I?' Her tone just as neutral, matching his energy.

She sat down next to him, wrapping her tail around her paws as her yellow-green eyes shifted towards the chasm, just as Coldgaze's had done. Bloomfire was a solitary cat. It felt odd to sit by Coldgaze, and converse. Unlike some members of her clan, Bloomfire actually held some respect for him. Not all his decisions were perfect, and she still tried to rile him up when she could, but he seemed to have decent ambitions and ideas. A cat that she could work with fundamentally.

Coldgaze didn't let his thoughts show too much on that matter at first, merely mulling over what she said. He slowly stood, stretching out his legs. "Your brother and I encountered Windclan warriors near Trespass point the other day. He did well - keeping the border safe despite being outnumbered at first." He kept a close eye across the gorge, maybe hoping a little bit to see the deputy Aspenberry. She had been quite a mouthpiece. Perhaps he would speak with her more at the gathering.

"As for... your beliefs." He didn't sound too judgmental but there was a part of him that was concerned about Bloomfire saying such things. "If a cat drowns in the river, is it them who failed or the clan they were raised in? Goosesong's sister was only an apprentice. I doubt it was her fault that her swimming skills weren't up to par." He waited for her to join him. "The clan is responsible for the failures as a collective. I hope that, as I get older, Riverclan can have a solid mentorship baseline, so no cat gets left behind."

There was a slight smile as he continued. "Not even Mistykit." He wouldn't dare say that in camp around Otterwhisker, but he still had his worries about their new addition.

'Briarfang's always been a good one. Not the best, but better than most. They're my kin. It would be embarrassing if they acted otherwise', she said bluntly, though her eyes shimmered slightly, perhaps with a hint of pride. 'What was WindClan like? Should I be.. sharpening my claws or perhaps focusing on something completely different altogether?' Her gaze slightly drifted into the direction of ThunderClan. Coldgaze would get the hint, in that she could trust.

'Both failed. Goosesong's sister shouldn't have fallen in in the first place. Obviously StarClan had other plans for her, but the clan didn't do enough for her either, left behind, washed away by the very thing that gives us life. If I fell into this chasm right now, I probably wouldn't survive. But, I haven't fallen in, I'm standing here feeling nothing but indifferent to those who have, practically laughing at their unfortunate lives. You die by something such as drowning and I snicker and think you pitiful, but in reality things just happen. You and I don't have a single speck of control, unless you want to be direct and take that life yourself.' In all honesty Bloomfire made it impossible to make out what part of her words were the truth and what were pure lies. Her voice was icy, laced with tease. Bloomfire didn't even know herself. Cats died because they just did. Yes, she said most things just to get a reaction out of others, but part of her truly did believed that perhaps if one died in such a misery filled way, they really weren't worth much at all.

Bloomfire's ears perked slightly at the mention of Mistykit, and she stood up, slowly padding in a wide circle around Coldgaze as she spoke. 'Ahh, the addition to Otterwhisker's brood. I'm surprised you brought her back. She's tainted with outsider blood, could grow up with bad intentions, or not be fit for clan life. I thought you would be against all that. She can never be a real RiverClanner right...' Bloomfire couldn't care less about Mistykit and where she came from. A cat was a cat and as long as it didn't have blood from another clan, she would be good for RiverClan, but where did Coldgaze, the oh so wonderful deputy sit within this. She paused, moving her face right in front of Coldgaze's, her whiskers brushing his face, 'Are you prepared to take the blame if things go wrong?

"Windclan is strong." He thought for a moment. "Of all the cats in these lands, I would side with them in a fight. Aspenberry, Fawnstar - they uphold our traditions. Not make up new ones that favor one cat over the other." His hackles rose at the thought of the nepotistic Fiercebloods. "I wish I had the chance to convince them to-" He didn't finish that sentence. He wanted, in this moment, to end Thunderclan, run them out of the forests. But that was wrong. Thunderclan belonged in the forest as much as Riverclan belonged in Twinwillows. He settled his emotions by banishing them from his heart, although they still rattled around in his mind for moons to come.

Coldgaze chose to believe Bloomfire when she stated her mind with a generous amount of sarcasm. No matter how much someone tried to speak and lie, if the words were coming out of their mouth some part of it told you something about them. Whether it was the opposite of what they believed; or what they thought their listener wanted to hear.

"I don't think Starclan wishes harm upon anyone." He looked down into the chasm, the water churning and frothing below. Her sentiment towards life was almost the opposite to the discussion he and Nettleplume had. After a moment he spoke candidly. "I don't agree. Destiny, lives, ambition. You have to grab it with both paws and dig your claws in to get what you want. I intend to squeeze it for all it's worth." He shot her a smirk at that. Digging his claws into Thunderclan fur certainly was well worth it regardless of control or fate.

He watched her with some level of amusement as she made circles around him. Her words were venomous, but he knew her family, her bloodline. He didn't back down; rather took a step towards her as she got in his face. "Harsh words, coming from you Bloomfire." He murmured, calling her bluff.

"As for blame - I said my piece. I know when to step back and let the show go on. Otterwhisker demanded she remain in the clan, and Boldstar bowed to her wishes. But we both know the kit isn't the issue - it's who might come looking for her." He searched her face for something, expression unreadable.

"Are you ready. To face the consequences?" He was no longer speaking of Mistykit.

'WindClan you say... interesting, though not that surprising.' To Bloomfire, the strength that the clan seemed to hold within its ties seemed almost worrying. They had little rifts between ranks and members, something that solidified them as a group, and she felt like she could say the same for ShadowClan too. It made them stronger, but to side with them in a fight was a large call, for despite the peace they upheld now, intentions could turn awry. She flicker her ear as an indication that she had heard what he said, choosing not to comment too much. For, now WindClan was the least of her priorities.

'Such strong feelings towards those from ThunderClan... while I do not disagree, do not let your anger cloud your judgement. You must prepare for such things, not start them out of the blue.' Coldgaze had Bloomfire's support, that was one thing the tom could be certain about, but the ruddy she-cat wasn't about to run head first into a battle due to one cats clear distaste towards them. A little border skirmish? She could do with one of those now, but a full blown battle would need meticulous preparation.

On the notion of ambition and destiny, they could agree to disagree. While Bloomfire new some aspects they could change with their own paws, ultimately things just happened, though she could see where Coldgaze was coming from, and for once she didn't argue against it, or mock such ideals. It was respectable, and perhaps something Bloomfire could try change her own views to if she weren't so... against caring about things. Not even trying to hide the falseness in her words, she shot him a smirk back, 'Oh no, you saw through me... poor Bloomfire has outsider blood too. Do you trust me, Coldgaze? Would you fight beside me just as you do with the rest of the clan? Because I am more than ready to face the consequences of our future's path, but I need to make sure I have the right cats with me.' she challenged back, though her eyes shone with an almost playful like nature. Coldgaze seemed to search for something within her own gaze, though she could not tell what. The future of RiverClan was in their paws, each step they made bringing them closer to something greater than they already had, and for once Bloomfire felt excited, thrilled at whatever would be coming next.

Coldgaze tilted his head, not backing away from the red she-cat as she spoke and teased him. "Preparation has been in motion for a few moons now Bloomfire. I would suggest we draw Thunderclan to the riverside, near the Stream Clearing. It's open and I want to trap any cat stupid enough to follow us into the V of the river on all sides."

He swished his tail, thoughtfully. "Not all battles for Sunningrocks have to take place at the Rocks themselves. It's a short run from one to the other and Thunderclan's warriors are as fierce as they are gullible. Cutting through the trees is sure to anger them. Making a few follow into an ambush is more than fine with me. Thinning their ranks is certainly a must in the grand scheme of things."

"As for trusting you." He stopped, looking back at her again. "I trust you are loyal to Riverclan. I trust that your kin are loyal." He had spent the past few moons mulling over Mistykit's situation and come to a conclusion. "A cat who was raised in a single clan is not a concern. As far as I care, so long as a cat has no other clan blood, they are as good as a full blooded clan-cat. No division of loyalty. No qualms about fighting." In Misty's case, he was less worried about her heritage in his every day life and more worried about her relationships with her siblings in the other clans. He would have to speak with her mentor about really emphasizing how little she was to care for them. They were her enemies.

"I say the same thing to you as I said to Briarfang. The consequences of failure are lesser on the back of a Deputy than a warrior. Should the absolute worst happen; I coerced you with my rank." He really didn't see a full fledged fight over the decision. But Boldstar had been more interested in maintaining the status quo as of late.  He wanted to upset it - there was sure to be conflict.

✧ ⭒ ✧ ⭒ ✧ ⭒ ✧ ⭒ ✧

It was good to hear that things had been thought about. It wasn't that she had expected otherwise, more just that she hadn't yet grasped how deep they were into the situation. Drawing them to the river made sense, it was something she would have chosen to do herself. The water would give RiverClan the upper paw, and the stream clearing was a safe distance from their own camp. She gave Coldgaze a quick grin, showing her sign of approval.

'So.. you plan on taking a few of them out?' her tone was neutral not betraying a hint of surprise, or excitement. 'You aiming for Ketrelswipe? Or perhaps Moosestar himself?' Bloomfire held the deputy's gaze, trying to read what she could from his eyes. Would Bloomfire kill? Yes. She had done it before, and she wasn't afraid to do it again, but it was never her driving motive. The battle would be for Sunningrocks, not to wastefully take the lives of others, but, she would definitely enjoy sinking her claws into some of the more... nuanced of ThunderClan.

Being not sure how Coldgaze would answer, she flicked her ear in recognition as he mentioned he trusted her as a loyal RiverClan warrior. He was right. Bloomfire could have left long ago, to live a more solitary life that she desired, bit RiverClan ran through her blood, it was her lifeline and the one thing she wished to protect.

In all honesty, Bloomfire would love to see Boldstar's reaction if things went haywire, knowing she was a key aspect of the idea, but Coldgaze had offered to take the blame, and she may as well accept. It would be safer that way anyway. It would be funny to see a little conflict between Boldstar and his deputy too. 'Well, seeing as you offered.. how can I refuse? I'm sure Boldstar will see right through it though. Something like this is right up my alley. For all he could know I could be the ringleader behind it all. I don't think it would be all that surprising. No need for coercion when I have no shame in my own actions.'

Bloomfire seemed satisfied with his battle plan. Not that he really cared about her opinion of his strategy but he would maybe bring her on more scouting missions along the Thunderclan border. She seemed to have a mind for strategy and the finer details - something he wanted to use to it's fullest. He enjoyed her quick grin before continuing along their patrol slowly moving along the river as the slope slowly lessened, leading them to a less dangerous drop down to the river-shore.

He. Did want to take out some of Thunderclan. The less warriors patrolling, the faster Riverclan could claim the area without a fight. According to the last gathering Thunderclan was already being menaced by loners and rouges. If they were already stretched thin, he wanted to make it worse. "I don't think killing the leadership will change much. They will have to be replaced, potentially with less reasonable cats." Which was a funny phrase but Moosestar was pathetic - not violent. There was - as Briarfang has posited - a chance for peace afterwards and he wanted to ensure he would be able to convince the leader to agree to his terms. Somehow, he doubted most of the warriors would agree to that. "I wouldn't mind Savagefox being taken out of commission. Or that Wrentalon."

He did look at her with new eyes in that moment, especially when she insisted to take the consequences of her actions on her own shoulders. "It doesn't matter what Boldstar thinks. He can accuse us of anything he wants. But at the end of the day, you don't have to put your skin in the game until there is an actual need to."

She followed closely behind Coldgaze, surveying her surroundings with pricked ears. 'Fair.' Just, don't be stupid she wanted to add, but he was probably sick of her shallow warnings. Picking off their stronger members made sense in the long term, but it was ambitious goal. Not something the ruddy warrior was against though.

Of course Coldgaze wouldn't let her put her name out there. He was deputy after all, and seemed to feel some sort of responsibility for not just himself, but the entirety of his clan. 'There is no point in me even arguing is there? Have it your way, dear deputy, but I don't hide behind others. I know who I am, and what sort of choices I make. If I think it better to tell the truth, I will do exactly that.'

A horrible, risky and foolish idea then sprouted in Bloomfire's mind. Something she knew would never be achievable, and potentially harmful in the long term, but, what would Coldgaze's reaction be? Mortified? Intrigued? Either way, she wanted to know. 'If you really want to rattle their core. Perhaps you could go after little Coyotekit. Steal her and bring her here, reuniting her with her sibling and leaving ThunderClan with no future warriors. From what I know they don't have any expecting queens, and during a battle would be the perfect time to duck in and take her.' She gave Coldgaze a glance, one that could hint that she was simply testing the waters on some more extreme measures, or perhaps otherwise. The problem was, was that Coyotekit was nearly an apprentice, and taking a kit was an impossible feat. She would likely never do it, but still. What would RiverClan's deputy think?

Bloomfire was a flame - living up to her name with ambition that almost rivalled his own. He had to stop at her suggestion, looking over at her with narrowed eyes.

What an... interesting proposition. Certainly, one that was much farther reaching than his original goal. But! It would prove beneficial if it ever came to fruition. With more kin in Riverclan, Mistykit would likely feel more at home - and have no reservations about fighting Thunderclan herself as she grew.

"That might be a hard sell with the clan." He didn't put down that line of thinking, rather let the logistics take over the conversation so he didn't have to address how much he liked it. "But, if Thunderclan refuses... that could be an avenue for a... consolation. As it were."

If Thunderclan refused to give up Sunningrocks he could always propose the exchange of the kit - soon apprentice- instead. "Please, elaborate. How do you suppose one would go about taking a kit from another clan?" He was curious to hear what Bloomfire had thought of. “The fight was never meant to reach either clan's camp. How would you validate this to a clan leader, and the clan themselves?

'The clan doesn't have to agree, I don't to things because others have told me I can. Be prepared to face the consequences, rather than dwell on something that could have happened.' She was surprised she wasn't shut down instantly, trying to read Coldgaze's face with her own analytical stare. She had paid little attention to the kits that had been found at fourtrees that one gathering, hence the one from ThunderClan had not come to her mind until now, but she was interested in her own turn of conversation nonetheless.

Going into ThunderClan's camp and taking a kit was absolutely stupid, but having a casual conversation with an apprentice...? Now that sounded much more plausible. 'We wait. Both you and I know its stupid to take a kit from the heart of a camp, but perhaps once she is older, perhaps someone can have a little talk with her at a gathering. Or, y'know, use her as a bargaining chip like you said. So many options, so many outcomes. It's all just a possibilities and talk now, but most things I say I am very much interested in making a reality.'

Convincing an apprentice to listen to a warrior during gatherings would be hard - especially with how protective each clan might be with their own 'fated' kit. But perhaps the new apprentice's could be asked to keep an eye out for them. Not that he really wanted to get the apprentice's wrapped up in his scheming. They were older now, yes, but they were also subject to the whims of their clanmates much of the time. If they wanted to be involved, he wanted them to be able to make a level-headed decision, not one influenced by their own eagerness and his rank.

"That is something to mull over." He cracked a smile. "If we really wanted to act like we had lost it I would suggest trying to reunite all of the siblings." It would certainly strengthen Riverclan's warriors and cohesiveness. Plus, they wouldn't have to break Mistykit's familial bonds in her training. "Given we don't know Starclan's intent for sure. They don't hand out destinies like herbs after all - its up to us to make the most of an opportunity."

After a moment of holding her gaze, he looked away, scanning the horizon. "Let's survey the battleground. I want to identify any areas that are advantageous to us near the Stream Clearing. I also want to know what is the fastest route between Sunningrocks and the clearing." He glanced over at her out of the corner of his eye. "We could... always do a practice run."

The 'through Thunderclan territory' was obviously implied.
