The morning air was crisp as Palestar padded near an open space in camp. The ground here was softer than most, at least it would have been if it wasn't Leafbare. Nevertheless it was perfect for what she planned today - especially with a murderous rogue on the loose.
She glanced back at Redpaw, her tail flicking in quiet assessment. Prey was scarce and tensions between clans always seemed to rise with the hunger. "We’ll reintroduce the basics...Warrior needs to know how hold their ground before they ever throw a strike. Balance is everything without it your enemy will have you with a single blow."
She planted her paws firmly, her stance wide but relaxed, ready to demonstrate. "I'll try to knock you from your paws. Are you ready?"

Redpaw followed after his mentor, his tail dragging in the mud. He had spent the night at Whisperingwind's vigil. He had spoken with the elders who had buried the body - with his brother who had found them. But it made no sense to him.
"How would being 'balanced' stop me from getting shredded?" He assumed his best defensive stance, although it was a little half-hearted, and had some obvious flaws. Redpaw clearly wasn't concentrating on training at the moment.
"Will this help me protect others?" The last question came out a bit harsher than he meant it.

Palestar’s ears twitched at the sharp edge in Redpaw’s voice. She studied him for a long moment, taking in the way his paws shifted unevenly, his weight unsteady - not just his stance, but in his thoughts. After the gruesome aspects of Whisperingwind's death, he had every reason to be on guard.
"Yes." Came her usually simple responce. "But only if you focus."
She circled him slowly, her steps deliberate, testing. "Balance isn’t just about standing upright. You can’t protect anyone if you’re the one getting knocked down first."
Without warning, she lunged, not with enough force to bowl him over, but enough to see if he’d steady himself, stumble, or get out of the way. "Show me you’re grounded, Redpaw. Then we can share some protective techniques."
