Coldgaze:

Glancing away from Briarfang - he would debate what they had said later - he regarded Merrykit. Would he like to mentor the young cat? She was one of the more energetic kits. Clearly eager to please, and more like her mother in size. And yet...

"No." Since Otterwhisker was an elder, she wasn't able to tutor her daughter - but to be honest if Coldgaze had a choice he would have chosen her in a heartbeat. He looked away from the expectant gaze of the kitten and scanned the camp for an example.

"Boldstar would be wise to pick someone closer to you in size." Someone such as...

"Thornstrike." He nodded in the direction of the smaller cat. "Would be a better mentor for you."

Perhaps his answer would be disappointing to the young cat, but it was the truth. But Boldstar was the one to the make the final decisions on mentors; so in theory she could end up as his apprentice in the long run. Only time would tell.

BRIARFANG

Briarfang's whiskers twitched in amusement. "Thornstrike as a mentor?" Suddenly, with their sister involved in the conversation, the tortie leaped down from the willow branch. "Funny. In an interesting way, though." They glanced down at the eager-looking kit, tilting their head in curiosity. "My sister can be tough, but she's a great warrior. If you can live up to her expectations."

Coldgaze:

He didn't have a response to that - surely Merrykit had noticed the size difference between her and her siblings even at this age. That, and she frequently experienced the difference that size makes for her and her brother. He wasn't interested in debating the semantics of something he knew to be true and unyielding with a kit. A small cat fought and lived differently than a big cat. There wasn't much else he could say. 

After a moment of looking at Merrykit with something that could be called skepticism, he gave Briarfang a brief nod. "I will discuss mentor-ship at a later date." He had to return to his previously decided course of action - napping. And as cute as these kits were, he hadn't slept the night before and it was starting to wear on him. Better they think him rude than lazy; a deputy wasn't supposed to be one to shirk work.

Trotting past Otterwhisker, who he also gave a deadpan nod to, Coldgaze headed for the entrance of the camp. He would find somewhere to sleep on the territory. Wishful thinking would say Sunningrocks was a perfect location - but Thunderclan had decided it was theirs. Again. He cleared his mind of the problem. That would have to be solved at a later date.

BRIARFANG

Briarfang tilted their head a bit in amused confusion as the deputy excused himself rather abruptly. They glanced back down a the kit whose question had gone unanswered. "It doesn't, much," they answered bluntly. "But knowing the way your body can move is necessary for warriors. If you can be taught by someone who is physically like you, the can provide insight."

With one last long stretch, Briarfang nodded at Otterwhisker. "Well, I'd better get some hunting done while the fish are swimming. It's been a lovely afternoon with you all." With a few flicks of their long, narrow tail, they headed off towards the stream.

What I dream, the day might send. Just around the riverbend.

Only time would tell who would end up mentoring her extended brood, but Otterwhisker had plenty of time to enjoy them until them. Mothering was like mentoring in a way, and after switching up her attention to wash her smaller kit, Merrykit, she could feel the small kit purr under her tongue. Their responses hadn't seemed to disappoint her too badly, and when she turned back to play with her siblings, Otterwhisker began the task of herding them back into the protective earth of the warren. Expeditions would have to wait, and already the kits seemed a bit sleepy from their explorations outside here. So Otterwhisker excused herself as the rest had, tail sweeping as she disappeared into the nursery.
