Affiliation Vitals
A Female cat.
By Unknown Sire out of Unknown Dam. Died in the Moon of Long Nights (2019) at the age of 45 moons (3.5 years) They have been dead for 13 moons (1 years) |
Appearance Short Description : A large, longhaired gray classic tabby she-cat with lime eyes Long Description :
Ferntail was a large, long-haired black silver classic tabby with yellow-green eyes. Her fur was thick and shed greatly. It looked shaggy if she didn’t meticulously groom it back to a fluffy, silkier state. Like her daughter, she had tufts of fur on her ears and between her toes. |
Personality Ferntail tried to present herself as practical, easy-going, and living in the moment. She almost never thought about a far off future for herself, nor could she imagine herself as an elder. To Ferntail, Clan cats could die or get hurt at any time. It was too distracting to think up extremely unlikely scenarios or wonder how birds felt when they flew. Whenever her mind attempted to do just that, she forced herself to focus on the present. Ferntail just wanted to be a good Clanmate and play her part in protecting ThunderClan as a warrior. Even if it was something as simple as blocking a draft with her body, she was happy to help. When she was younger, Ferntail was more impulsive. The farthest Ferntail had thought ahead was when she decided that she wanted kits. The problem was that the tom she wanted them by was not of her Clan. Once she’d had her litter, Ferntail tried to set a good example, but found herself less patient than she thought. She hadn’t expected raising one kit to be so mentally exhausting. |

Full History :
Ferntail was born Fernkit in the Moon of Long Sun (2016), apprenticed as Fernpaw in the Moon of Long Nights (2016), and made a warrior as Ferntail in the Moon of Unnamed Blue (2017).
At the age of twenty-two moons, Ferntail gave birth to Mistyleaf and a stillborn tomkit in the Moon of Melting Waters (2018). She invoked queen’s discretion and left their sire unnamed. He was actually a ShadowClan warrior called Cedarfang. They had first met as apprentices at a Gathering, but the first time they met in their own territories was as warriors. She’d taken to checking the Clan’s shared borders more often when she went hunting in leaf-bare. The season was hard on all Clans and she didn’t think the others were above trespassing, which was what Cedarfang had done when the prey he pursued crossed into ThunderClan territory.
They clashed. He left their fight with a deeply scratched nose and Ferntail left with less scratches and his prey. They found themselves with begrudging respect and bemusement for the other. They goaded one another from across their borders and maintained an unsubtle hostility towards each other at Gatherings. To Ferntail, their relationship wasn’t friendship–they couldn’t be allies. Ferntail had already told him that she would kill him in battle if it came to it, and he agreed that she should and that he’d do the same. She knew her feelings were complicated and infuriating and wrong, but it wasn’t enough to stop her.
Despite what could’ve been her better judgement, Ferntail asked Cedarfang to sire a litter for her. She admitted that she was, somehow, was more impressed by him than ThunderClan’s toms. He teased that he didn’t know whether to feel flattered by her or sorry for ThunderClan for its poor selection, but he agreed to her request. When Ferntail asked why he agreed, he told her they all joined StarClan in the end.
Ferntail told herself she was doing this to strengthen ThunderClan. She caught little sight of Cedarfang in the moons after their tryst, and she later learned that he’d died of illness in the Moon of First Green (2018). Secretly, Ferntail felt guilt and relief at Cedarfang’s death. Knowledge of their transgression would now die with her and her alone. She wondered if that illness and her stillbirth had been punishments, but she reminded herself that she still had a live kit and plenty of good cats too died from things outside of their control. Ferntail didn’t regret having Mistykit and wanted her to be the kind of cat Ferntail hadn’t.
Ferntail loved Mistykit, but also found her frustrating and confusing. Ferntail had been ready for teaching basic skills and running around to keep her kit out of trouble, not for being asked random questions about everything and having her answers spawn more questions. Ferntail was happy to tell Mistykit stories and teach Clan traditions, but she thought Mistykit didn’t pay enough attention to the correct parts of some of them.
Not everything needed an analysis. Ferntail knew Mistykit knew that and that she knew the right purpose of what Ferntail taught her, but Mistykit would still do it! On top of that, Mistykit could bring up something so unrelated, Ferntail couldn’t figure out how she’d gotten there. It was like trying to follow a leaf that got caught up in rapids. When Mistykit explained her thought process, it was like a stream split across too many rocks. Ferntail was relieved when Mistykit became an apprentice and got out of her fur. She was further thrilled when Mistypaw became Mistyleaf, but Ferntail still worried about how inquisitive she was.
In the Moon of Long Nights (2019), Ferntail died of blackcough at the age of forty-five moons. She fought the illness as best she could, but she was at peace with herself when she knew she wouldn’t recover. It was then that she finally let her mind wander freely, unburdened by the weight of responsibility. Ferntail claimed she had no regrets about her life. If she’d done anything differently, her life wouldn’t have been as it was. In truth, she didn’t think she’d been a good mother and wished she’d been more patient, but she’d have all the time in the world to think upon that and more in StarClan.
