Tiptoe through the murk and mire
✧ ⭒ ♦ ⭒ ♖ ⭒ ♦ ⭒ ✧

Duskmantle's paws carried him to a familiar silhouette in the open land of ShadowClan territory. Its trunk was little more than a charred pillar with blackened bark and he paused briefly to sniff at its base to the hollow there.

He'd slipped inside without a second thought when he was young, hidden there from the weather or from passing patrols...But now at his adult size that was no longer happening. With a flick of his tail, Duskmantle abandoned the hollow altogether and instead tested the trunk with his claws and begun to scale it. Guess he'd just have to settle for the view.

From a lower branch he settled, overlooking the marsh as the mid morning breeze stirred the arch of his back.

Beewhisker’s ears twitched as they led Smokepaw to the border of Trespass point, well, WindClan’s side of it anyway. They didn’t look at Smokepaw, how could they? He was the kit of the friend that never left their heart, nor their mind, for the past few moons now, looking at his would make things worse for themself, and they at least wanted to remain composed at the very least, even if that spark that they had before was completely gone, pressed deep by the weight of grief.

“If you were to see something happen here, or anywhere, you’ll need to know how to report it.” They said, an uncharacteristically blank and motionless tone in their voice as they gestured to the border of Trespass Point. “Not that it matters, unless something big and deadly comes along.” They added with a murmur. Part of them just want to rot in their nest, but another part, bound by duty, stood, they’d just need to finish this. Then go back… now that they can’t rendezvous themselves out of camp now at least.

Beewhisker was silent for a moment, there was no hope of Cedarpaw returning anymore either, the others had slowly given up the search, but part of them continued to look into the direction of twoleg place… just in case. But then their gaze turned straight ahead, to the border. “If you and I drove off a trespasser, say, a warrior from another clan on our territory, what would you say to Emberdawn or Fawnstar when we got back?”

She was pleased he wasn't injured anywhere else and after she stopped the bleeding and put a poultice on it, if he wanted to go back to help his clanmates, she wouldn't stop him.

After sitting him down and glancing to see that Robinpaw had followed with the herbs, she took the wet moss and pressed it lightly against his ear, using the water soaked up by it to gently rinse his ear so she could see the injury better.

Setting the moss down, she directed her words at her apprentice, her tone firmer and more clipped than usual, an indication that there was a lesson in this. "I asked for wet moss to rinse the blood from Stromfall's ear. An ear wound can bleed profusely and can give you a belly ache if you continually try clean it off with your tongue."

The small brown tabby pulled a grape leaf towards the small herb pile before she reached down to take the comfrey roots in her mouth and set them at her paws. Looking at Robinpaw, gave a bob of the head at the goldenrod leaves to indicate that the apprentice should start chewing them up and putting them on grape leaf.

"Do you know why I did not immediately move Stormfall to my den?" Tigerrush asked as she began to chew up the comfrey root into a paste.

The skies above Whitehart had settled into a blanket of shifting grey, the kind of overcast afternoon that wrapped the village in an acceptable reprieve - just the way Bambi liked it. It was ideal, really.

Clouds meant no harsh sunlight upon his delicate skin. His Lordship Bambi-Bap Mandu, First of His Name strutted on the white side-roads of Whitehart, the pink feathers of his boa collar fluttering gently in the warm breeze where they had become his runway.

Years had passed since the height of his competitive career and age had softened his once fit frame into something... comfortably round - and wrinkly. but that discipline was drilled into him as a kitten. Muscle memory...and beauty deserved rehersal.

He passed the glass of a sliding window where he studied his reflection. Sure his wrinkles say deeper than they had in Seoul, but he was just elder...He was still one hundred percent BamBam.

And he was blissfully unaware that he would meet a new face this day.

Walking absentmindedly around the border markers, frost blue eyes locked on the stars in the sky, Polaris found himself remembering his mother's fondness of the stars and stargazing, many of the stories she told him resurfacing within his mind.

Flicking his white tipped tail and twitching his ears, he sat, watching as an occasional monster passed on the black Thunderpath, finding that he did not fear them at all. If anything, monsters were about as interesting and notable as grass to him. Of course, he acknowledged the danger that they posed, but as long as he didn't get in their way, they wouldn't hurt him.

Turning his gaze to the half-full moon, he found himself once again captivated by the starlit sky. Blocking out everything around him except for the scents of the border, Thunderpath, and any critter that could come up on him while he was distracted, Polaris sighed inwardly, a relief that he hadn't felt in a long time resting within him.

"What a wonderful place to stargaze." He said, his own words sounding to him like a whisper. Snowy black and white pelt glowing in the starlight, he wondered if the stars had always been quite so beautiful here. Surely he sat beneath the same sky he did as a kit, yet somehow... the stars seemed so much brighter.

There’s always something to do.
· · ─ ·✶· ─ · ·

Smallbird blinked her eyes open and let out a slow, gentle exhale. Her heart felt aquiver with nervous excitement. As her eyes adjusted to the gloom of the den, she smiled sadly as her gaze fell over the shapes of the cats she had grown up with. She sighed lightly, regret and guilt already bubbling in her heart. She didn’t want to leave these cats. To leave her clan, but she had to. The young gray tabby she-cat just felt like too much of a burden to her clan to stay. Their survival chances would be far better without her around to feed and look after.

Smallbird took in a quiet, deep breath and carefully stood up. It was some time before dawn, early enough to ensure that the dawn patrol wouldn’t catch her sneaking out, but late enough that a night patrol wouldn’t catch her either. The young she-cat had spent hours pretending to be asleep, waiting for this moment. Carefully, keeping her paws as light as when she hunted mice, Smallbird picked her way past the various nests of sleeping clanmates. She paused for a moment at the den’s entrance, looking back at her brothers. She would miss them the most, but hopefully Spidertongue would look after Greypebbles.

Turning back to the camp, she checked for anyone who might be awake before padding her way toward the dirtplace tunnel. Smallbird tried to act nonchalant as she walked, tried to pretend that she was just going to relieve herself. As she entered the path to where the clan often relieved themselves when in the camp, the gray tabby wrinkled her nose at the smell. Upturned soil and the smell of dirt was strong here, but this was the best way to get out of the camp unseen. Her frequent visits to see Fox had proven this idea to the she-cat and now she was once more sneaking away. This time, however, she didn’t plan to return.

Carefully and quietly, Smallbird pushed her way through the small gap in the undergrowth that bordered the camp. Once through, the gray tabby shook herself out and took a deep breath. It was time. Today was the day she made the ultimate sacrifice to protect her clan. Steeling herself for the new life she was about to start, Smallbird turned her gaze toward her usual meeting point with Fox, and began trotting in that direction. She listened carefully as she walked, preparing to hide if she heard the sound of paws. She didn’t want to get caught by anycat, lest her courage to leave falter.

By some miracle, or perhaps skill from repeated journeys, the young warrior met no cat on her journey. Upon reaching the border where she usually met with Fox, Smallbird stopped and checked around her. Feeling safe and reassured that no cat from Thunderclan had noticed or followed her, Smallbird relaxed and let out a gentle breath. “Fox? Are you here?” she called out softly and waited for the tom to reply. If he wasn’t here tonight, she would go looking for him in one of their other meeting locations.
